AI Article Synopsis

  • Dark matter might consist of compact dark objects (CDOs) that interact weakly with normal matter and can move within the Earth.
  • A CDO in the Earth's inner core has a roughly 55-minute orbital period, which could create time-varying signals detectable by gravimeters.
  • Current data from superconducting gravimeters suggest CDOs can only exist inside the Earth if their mass and orbital radius are extremely small, specifically if their product is less than 1.2×10^{-13} times the mass and radius of Earth.

Article Abstract

Dark matter could be composed of compact dark objects (CDOs). These objects may interact very weakly with normal matter and could move freely inside the Earth. A CDO moving in the inner core of the Earth will have an orbital period near 55 min and produce a time-dependent signal in a gravimeter. Data from superconducting gravimeters rule out such objects moving inside the Earth unless their mass m_{D} and or orbital radius a are very small so that m_{D}a<1.2×10^{-13}M_{⊕}R_{⊕}. Here, M_{⊕} and R_{⊕} are the mass and radius of the Earth, respectively.

Chemical transformations at metal oxide interfaces that are triggered by mechanical energy set the basis for applications in the fields of tribo- and mechanochemistry, ceramic and composite processing, and piezoelectric devices. We investigated the early stages of tribochemically initiated radical chemistry of structurally well-defined TiO and BaTiO nanoparticles in argon or in oxygen atmosphere. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy enabled the determination of the chemical nature and concentration of paramagnetic surface species which form upon uniaxial powder compaction at room temperature.

Searches for exotic spin-dependent interactions with spin sensors.

Numerous theories have postulated the existence of exotic spin-dependent interactions beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Spin-based quantum sensors, which utilize the quantum properties of spins to enhance measurement precision, emerge as powerful tools for probing these exotic interactions. These sensors encompass a wide range of technologies, such as optically pumped magnetometers, atomic comagnetometers, spin masers, nuclear magnetic resonance, spin amplifiers, and nitrogen-vacancy centers.

Article Synopsis
  • Dark-field microscopy (DFM) is popular for high-contrast imaging of specimens without labels, but it faces limitations in optical alignment and resolution.
  • The new technique, deep-learning assisted plasmonic dark-field microscopy (DAPD), combines plasmonic dark-field microscopy with a deep-learning approach to achieve super-resolution imaging.
  • DAPD has shown a resolution improvement of 2.8 times for label-free specimens and offers a compact and enhanced alternative to traditional DFM methods.

The short-wave infrared range is highly significant for spectroscopic sensing and upcoming optical communication applications. Integrating active and passive photonic components is essential to achieve compact optical solutions. In this paper, we show, for the first time to our knowledge, a wavelength-selective detection system based on the heterogeneous integration of two grating-coupled InGaAs photodetectors operating at the 2µm wave band, with a wavelength selectivity provided by a dual-channel Mach-Zehnder interferometer fabricated using a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer.

Mimetic gravity has gained significant appeal in cosmological contexts, but static spherically symmetric space-times within the baseline theory are highly non-trivial: the two natural solutions are a naked singularity and a black hole space-time obtained through an appropriate gluing procedure. We study the shadow properties of these two objects, finding both to be pathological. In particular, the naked singularity does not cast a shadow, whereas the black hole casts a shadow which is too small.
