Van der Waals (vdW) materials with magnetic order have been heavily pursued for fundamental physics as well as for device design. Despite the rapid advances, so far, they are mainly insulating or semiconducting, and none of them has a high electronic mobility-a property that is rare in layered vdW materials in general. The realization of a high-mobility vdW material that also exhibits magnetic order would open the possibility for novel magnetic twistronic or spintronic devices. Here, we report very high carrier mobility in the layered vdW antiferromagnet GdTe. The electron mobility is beyond 60,000 cm V s, which is the highest among all known layered magnetic materials, to the best of our knowledge. Among all known vdW materials, the mobility of bulk GdTe is comparable to that of black phosphorus. By mechanical exfoliation, we further demonstrate that GdTe can be exfoliated to ultrathin flakes of three monolayers.

Highly Thermal-Conductive Cubic Boron Arsenide: Single-Crystal Growth, Properties, and Future Thin-Film Epitaxy.

Heat dissipation has become a critical challenge in modern electronics, driving the need for a revolution in thermal management strategies beyond traditional packaging materials, thermal interface materials, and heat sinks. Cubic boron arsenide (c-BAs) offers a promising solution, thanks to its combination of high thermal conductivity and high ambipolar mobility, making it highly suitable for applications in both electronic devices and thermal management. However, challenges remain, particularly in the large-scale synthesis of a high-quality material and the tuning of its physical properties.

Dynamic random access memory (DRAM) has been a cornerstone of modern computing, but it faces challenges as technology scales down, particularly due to the mismatch between reduced storage capacitance and increasing OFF current. The capacitorless 2T0C DRAM architecture is recognized for its potential to offer superior area efficiency and reduced refresh rate requirements by eliminating the traditional capacitor. The exploration of two-dimensional (2D) materials further enhances scaling possibilities, though the absence of dangling bonds complicates the deposition of high-quality dielectrics.

Recently, two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials have emerged as a promising platform for studying exchange bias (EB) phenomena due to their atomically flat surfaces and highly versatile stacking configurations. Although complex spin configurations between 2D vdW interfaces introduce challenges in understanding their underlying mechanisms, they can offer more possibilities in realizing effective manipulations. In this study, we present a spin-orthogonal arranged 2D FeGaTe (FGaT)/CrSBr vdW heterostructure, realizing the EB effect with the bias field as large as 1730 Oe at 2 K.

Polarized photodetectors based on anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) materials display great potential applications in communications and optoelectronics. However, the existence of high dark current, low anisotropic ratio, and response speed limits their development. In this paper, a broadband polarization angle-dependent photodetector based on the PdSe/NbSe van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction has been constructed.

One-Dimensional Excitonic Insulator of MTe (M = Mo, W) Atomic Wires.

Nano Lett

January 2025

Guangdong Basic Research Center of Excellence for Structure and Fundamental Interactions of Matter, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Quantum Engineering and Quantum Materials, School of Physics, South China Normal University, Guangzhou 510006, China.

Coulomb attraction with weak screening can trigger spontaneous exciton formation and condensation, resulting in a strongly correlated many-body ground state, namely, the excitonic insulator. One-dimensional (1D) materials natively have ineffective dielectric screening. For the first time, we demonstrate the excitonic instability of single atomic wires of transition metal telluride MTe (M = Mo, W), a family of 1D van der Waals (vdW) materials accessible in the laboratory.
