Controlled experiment was conducted on 428 adult persons. A study was made of the reaktogenic properties and the immunological activity of live enteral dysentery vaccine Flexner 2a and Sonne from the spontaneous mutants developed at the N.F. Gamaleya Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. The vaccine is prepared in the form of sugar-coated pills covered with an acid-fast substance protecting from the gastric juice action. A single administration of the vaccine in a dose of up to 4 pills (6 to 8 X 10(9) live microbial cells) induced no general or local reactions. At the same time enteral administration of such low vaccine doses of the vaccine caused a significant accretion of specific hemagglutinins, including IgA, IgG, IgM antibodies in the serum, this pointing to the marked general and local immunological activity of the vaccine. Vaccine strains Flexner 2a and Sonne were isolated from 16 to 40% of the persons vaccinated, for the maximum period of 5 to 8 days. The isolated strains were avirulent when checked by the keratoconjuctival test.

Retrospective epidemiological analysis of the incidence of viral hepatitis A, Sonne and Flexner (bacillary) dysenteries, and rotavirus infection in different regions of Russia for the period of 2003-2008 revealed common and distinct features in the epidemic process of these conditions. All of them proved more widespread among children than in adults. Their distribution over the country's territory is highly nonuniform.

For the laboratory evaluation of the severity of intoxication syndrome, the spectral characteristics of low and median molecular weight substances (LMMWS) were studied in the plasma and red blood cells of 129 children with bacterial infections, among whom there were 76 children with acute intestinal infections (Flexner's dysentery, Sonne dysentery, and salmonellosis) and 53 children with bacterial purulent meningitis of hemophilic and meningococcal etiology. In the acute period, all the examinees were found to have considerable qualitative and quantitative distinctions of blood spectrograms from the normal values. There was an association of the spectral characteristics of blood LMMWS with the nosological entity, etiology and stage of disease, and the severity of intoxication syndrome.

To study bacteremic processes with transmission electron microscopy, blood groups were examined in the representative groups of patients with typhoid fever, generalized forms of yersinosis, pseudotuberculosis, Flexner's shigelosis, and Sonne's shigelosis at different stages of acute cyclic diseases and in those with chronic Salmonella typhi carriage. Bacteremia of typical unaltered causative organisms is shown to occur only in the feverish period of disease. The morphofunctional organization of a causative agent in this period is similar to that of museum bacterial strains, except that the bacteria circulating in the blood of patients have vesicles that are morphologically equivalent to endotoxin.

In connection with the growth of mortality in Flexner's dysentery observed since 1991 and a rise in morbidity in this infection since 1993 the data on the registered cases of Shigella flexneri and Shigella sonnei infections in St. Petersburg for the period of 1953-1994 were analyzed. In the 60-80s the specific features of the epidemic process was determined by S.

A non-Euclidean metric, stable to pollutions in sample data, for hierarchical cluster analysis in epidemiology is proposed. The simplicity of calculations permits its easy use in practice. On the basis of this metric the towns of Tula Province have been grouped according to morbidity rates in the shigellosis of Flexner and Sonne with the conjugated value of parameters.
