Pulmonary Vascular Structure and Function Are Related to Exercise Capacity in Health and COPD.

Chest

October 2024

Division of Pulmonary Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada; G.F. MacDonald Centre for Lung Health, Covenant Health, Edmonton, AB, Canada. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Aerobic exercise training is thought to not affect lung structure or function, but the study explores the link between pulmonary vascular health and exercise capacity (VO2peak).
  • Researchers examined data from participants in the CanCOLD study, looking at factors like CT blood vessel volumes and pulmonary diffusing capacity in different groups (never-smokers, ever-smokers, and those with COPD).
  • The findings indicate that aspects of pulmonary vascular structure and function are significantly related to VO2peak, even in individuals with COPD, suggesting these associations extend beyond just airflow limitations.

Changes in the Functional Classification of Spirometry Using the New Interpretation Standard 2022: A Multicenter Study.

Introduction: Pulmonary function tests are vital for diagnosing lung diseases, assessing treatment responses, and monitoring respiratory health. Recent updates to interpretive standards by the European Respiratory and American Thoracic Societies (ERS/ATS) in 2022 introduced significant changes compared to the 2005 standards. They include incorporating lung volume measurements, non-specific and mixed disorders, introducing z-scores for functional abnormality assessment, reducing severity categories from five to three, and revising criteria for positive bronchodilator responses.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses how workplace exposures lead to various respiratory diseases, citing a joint statement by the American Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society in 2019 that highlights this issue.
  • Recent publications have confirmed the significant role of work-related factors in diseases like asthma and chronic bronchitis, although research on some conditions has been limited.
  • Understanding the impact of occupational exposures is vital for developing public health strategies and improving patient care, emphasizing the need for collaboration among healthcare professionals and policymakers.

Tunis Med

March 2023

Heart Failure (LR12SP09) Research Laboratory, Farhat Hached Hospital, Sousse, Tunisia.

The diagnosis and management of the most prevalent chronic respiratory diseases partially rely on parameters obtained from pulmonary functional tests (PFTs), including spirometry, plethysmography, and carbon monoxide diffusion capacity (DLCO) measurement. In practice, the interpretation of PFTs' parameters is based on international recommendations issued by renowned scientific societies such as the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and the European Respiratory Society (ERS). The interpretation standards for PFTs established by ATS/ERS in 2005 were updated in 2022.
