AI Article Synopsis

  • Many acute fractures overlook underlying bone metabolic disorders, like osteoporosis, in their management.
  • Fracture liaison services (FLS) provide comprehensive care for fractures, helping to diagnose and treat osteoporosis effectively.
  • Including podiatric practitioners in FLS programs could enhance patient care and lower healthcare costs even more.

Article Abstract

Underlying bone metabolic disorders are often neglected when managing acute fractures. The term fracture liaison services (FLS) refers to models of care with the designated responsibility of comprehensive fracture management, including the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. Although there is evidence of the effectiveness of FLS in reducing health-care costs and improving patient outcomes, podiatric practitioners are notably absent from described FLS models. The integration of podiatric practitioners into FLS programs may lead to improved patient care and further reduce associated health-care costs.

Fillet of toe flap (FTF) leverages the "spare parts" algorithm in reconstructive surgery-utilizing tissue from amputated or otherwise non-salvageable body parts, thus avoiding donor-site morbidity. This study assesses the efficacy of FTF coverage in non-traumatic foot amputations. A retrospective review of patients undergoing foot amputation with FTF coverage between January 2013 to August 2023 was conducted.

Introduction As part of the Milestones Initiative of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), residents in neurosurgery are expected to participate in either clinical research or basic science research. Therefore, each neurosurgical training program must offer the support and opportunity to achieve this goal. In 2012, a structured effort to promote a resident culture of research was introduced into the authors' neurosurgery residency training curriculum.

Background: To assess trends of first cases of lower extremity amputation (LEA) related to diabetes and/or peripheral arterial disease (PAD), according to areas of residency and neighbourhood material and social deprivation quintiles, in the province of Quebec, Canada.

Methods: Using the Quebec Integrated Chronic Disease Surveillance System, we calculated crude and age-standardized annual incidence rates of first LEA (total, minor, and major) among adults 40 years of age and older with diabetes and/or PAD in fiscal years 2006 and 2019. Area of residency was compiled in 3 categories: (1) Montreal and other census metropolitan areas; (2) midsize agglomerations (10,000-100,000 inhabitants); and (3) small towns and rural areas (< 10,000 inhabitants).

In this article, we document the widespread presence of bony ridges in the neural canals of non-avian dinosaurs, including a wide diversity of sauropods, two theropods, a thyreophoran, and a hadrosaur. These structures are present only in the caudal vertebrae. They are anteroposteriorly elongate, found on the lateral walls of the canal, and vary in size and position both taxonomically and serially.
