Introduction: Facial paralysis impairs the mimetic functions of the facial musculature. In pediatric patients, free functioning muscle transfer neurotized with an intact contralateral facial nerve is the gold standard for smile reanimation. In response to requests from families of children with facial paralysis, the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children hosted an inaugural "Facial Paralysis Family Day." The objective was to create an opportunity for families to meet, exchange stories, and build support networks.
Methods: This study was a quality improvement project to conduct a needs assessment and evaluate the feasibility and satisfaction of implementing a family support intervention for individuals living with facial paralysis.
Results: The needs assessment demonstrated that families were most interested in advances in medicine, therapy and coping sessions and meeting other families. The post-event evaluation questionnaire indicated that attendees enjoyed the event, would attend again and found it highly valuable connecting and networking other families. It also indicated that key needs identified were addressed, with excellent ratings for the presentation discussing advances in medicine (100% rated "good" or "very good"), the therapy sessions (92% rated "good" or "very good") and the presentations by patients and their families (100% rated "good" or "very good.") DISCUSSION:: Two areas of improvement highlighted were elaborating further on medical advances and facilitating interactions between families. Overall, this event was well regarded and will likely be repeated at our institution and serve as a valuable resource for other hospitals planning to organize a similar event.

Purpose: To assess adverse neurological risks following influenza vaccination in older adults.
Methods: Using a linked database of healthcare administrative claims data and vaccination records from an urban city in Japan (April 1, 2014, to March 31, 2020), we conducted an observational study utilizing a self-controlled case series design. We identified individuals aged ≥ 65 years who experienced adverse neurological outcomes, defined as hospitalizations related to epilepsy, paralysis, facial paralysis, neuralgia, neuritis, optic neuritis, migraine, extrapyramidal disorders, Guillain-Barre syndrome, or narcolepsy.

Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a severe and persistent pain condition following herpes zoster infection. This case report details the analgesic effects of acupuncture combined with electroacupuncture in a 66-year-old male patient presenting with PHN and peripheral facial paralysis, who showed limited response to conventional treatment with corticosteroids and antiviral medications. Following a comprehensive treatment protocol, including pricking-cupping bloodletting, and targeted acupuncture, the patient experienced significant pain relief and improved facial nerve function.

Methods: Between July 2021 and December 2023, patients who underwent parotidectomy were prospectively enrolled and assigned to either the full-endoscopic parotidectomy group (Group I) or the conventional surgery group (Group II). Facial paralysis is an infrequent and serious potential complication of acute otitis media (AOM). We describe a pediatric case of rapidly progressive facial paralysis as a secondary complication alongside AOM, caused by the non-typeable (NTHi) strain, which was managed with facial nerve decompression, glucocorticoid medication, and antimicrobial chemotherapy. The reasons why NTHi becomes pathogenic in certain patients are not yet fully understood, and the specific interactions and adaptations that lead to complications must be further investigated, as they result in more complex treatment approaches.
