Compared to mammals, little is known about the development of the respiratory control system in birds. In the present study, ventilation and metabolism were measured in Coturnix quail chicks exposed to room air, hypoxia (11 % O), and hypercapnia (4% CO) at 0-1, 3-4, and 6-7 days posthatching (dph). Mass-specific ventilation and metabolic rate tended to increase between 0-1 and 3-4 dph and then decrease again between 3-4 and 6-7 dph. The magnitude of the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) increased with age. The HVR also exhibited a biphasic shape in younger quail: after the initial increase in ventilation, ventilation declined back to (0-1 dph), or toward (4 dph), baseline. Older chicks (6-7 dph) had a "sustained HVR" in which ventilation remained high throughout the hypoxic challenge. The biphasic HVR did not appear to be caused by a decline in metabolic rate; although hypoxic hypometabolism was observed in quail chicks in all three age groups, the metabolic response appeared to occur more slowly than the biphasic HVR. The biphasic ventilatory response was also specific to hypoxia since the hypercapnic ventilatory response (HCVR) was characterized by a sustained increase in ventilation in all three age groups. The magnitude of the HCVR decreased with age. These results point to several similarities in the development of ventilatory chemorflexes between Coturnix quail and newborn mammals, including age-dependent (1) increases in the HVR, (2) transitions from a biphasic to a sustained HVR, and (3) decreases in the HCVR. Whether homologous mechanisms underlie these developmental changes remains to be determined.

Japanese quail () is a popular experimental animal model in scientific research. The present study investigated the effects of dietary multiple enzyme supplementation on growth performance, carcass characteristics, nutrient digestibility and small intestinal histomorphology in quails fed diets based on wheat and soya bean meal. A total number of 192 1-day-old quails were assigned to three treatments with 16 replicates in each and four quails replicate for 38 days.

In tropical and subtropical climate regions, heat stress is one of the main causes of production losses in laying quails, aggravated by the antinutritional effects of the phytate in diet ingredients, which negatively affect the bioavailability of minerals, especially calcium and phosphorus. This situation results in a reduction in production and the quality of eggs from commercial laying quails. Several nutritional strategies are utilized to reduce the adverse effects of high temperatures and antinutritional factors such as phytate.

To enhance the health and performance of poultry, novel approaches have to be created. Using appropriate nutritional interventions to enhance body physiology and thus enhance productivity is one of these approaches. The purpose of the present investigation intended to examine how growing quail physiology and growth is affected by supplementing diets with tryptophan (Trp) and/or canthaxanthin (CX).

The laryngeal mound (LM) formed the caudal part of the pharyngeal floor, which varied in position, shape, and length at different ages. This work aimed to study the morphogenesis of the LM in the embryonic and post hatching periods grossly, histologically, and by scanning electron microscopy using forty-eight Japanese quails. The LM primordia appeared on the 8th day of incubation as a raised elevation carried on a deep median symmetrical sulcus (glottis primordium).

During avian germ cell formation, primordial germ cells (PGCs) differentiate into prospermatogonia in testicular seminiferous tubules or into oogonia in the ovarian cortex in late-stage embryos. Although estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have been suggested to affect the differential fate of avian germ cells, there is currently no established method to examine the effects of EDCs on the differentiation potential of germline cells due to large amount of unidentified proteins present in avian germ cells. Regarding reliable molecular probes for the detection of germ cells that differentiated from the PGCs of Japanese quail, the prospermatogonium and oogonium, respectively, integrin beta1 (ITGB1), insulin-like growth factor 2-binding protein 1 (IGF2BP1), and stimulated by retinoic acid 8 (STRA8) were identified as marker proteins by RNA-seq and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry analyses.
