Hybrid metal-semiconductor nanostructures unifying plasmonic and high-refractive-index materials in a single resonant system demonstrate a wide set of unique optical properties. Such systems are a perspective for a broad palette of applications, but the link between their inner structure and optical properties is a very sensitive issue, which is still not revealed. Here, we describe the influence of internal microstructure of a hybrid gold-silicon nanoparticle (the gold nanoparticle with embedded silicon nanograins) on the up-conversion white-light photoluminescence.

Epithelial and stromal thickness profile and lens decentration in myopic orthokeratology.

J Optom

October 2023

Ocular Surface and Contact Lens Research Laboratory, Faculty of Optics and Optometry, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Spain; Clínica Oftalmológica Dr. Parafita, Ribeira, Spain.

Purpose: To study topographic epithelial and total corneal thickness changes in myopic subjects undergoing successful orthokeratology treatment in connection with the objective assessment of contact lens decentration.

Methods: A prospective-observational and non-randomized study in 32 Caucasian myopic eyes undergoing Ortho-k for 3 months. Total, epithelial, and stromal thicknesses were studied before and after Ortho-k treatment, using optical coherence tomography with anterior segment application software.

Purpose: To evaluate the characteristic of corrective epithelial thickness after femtosecond laser-assisted lenticule intrastromal keratoplasty (LIKE) to correct moderate-to-high hyperopia.

Methods: The prospective case series study of the LIKE procedure was performed to correct moderate-to-high hyperopia. The epithelial thickness map was generated by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) in the corneal central 9-mm zone.

Redistribution of Epithelium and Stroma and Their Relationship With Corneal Curvature After 1-Month Cessation of Overnight Orthokeratology.

Eye Contact Lens

June 2024

Department of Ophthalmology (Y.Y.), Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine, Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, People's Republic of China; and Department of Ophthalmology (C.C., Z.C., L.Z., F.X., J.Z.), Eye & ENT Hospital, Fudan University, NHC Key Laboratory of Myopia (Fudan University), Key Laboratory of Myopia, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Shanghai Research Centre of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Shanghai, People's Republic of China.

Objectives: To investigate the changes in the thickness of epithelium and stroma and their relationship with corneal curvature following the cessation of overnight orthokeratology for a period of 1 month.

Methods: This prospective study consecutively included 20 juveniles (20 right eyes) who had undergone overnight orthokeratology for a minimum of one year and were willing to discontinue the treatment. The study measured and compared epithelial and corneal curvature using optical coherence tomography and Medmont topographer at the first day of cessation and 1 month after cessation.

Short-term Changes in Epithelial and Optical Redistribution Induced by Different Orthokeratology Designs.

Eye Contact Lens

December 2023

Tianjin Key Laboratory of Retinal Functions and Diseases (Z.M., R.W.), Tianjin Branch of National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Disease, Eye Institute and School of Optometry, Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital, Tianjin, China; Eye Hospital and School of Ophthalmology and Optometry (Z.M., S.C., N.Z., Z.L., Y.Z.), Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, China; National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Diseases, Wenzhou, China; Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University Hangzhou Branch, Hangzhou, China; and Mailman School of Public Health (T.C.), Columbia University Irving Medical Center, New York, NY.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared corneal changes induced by two orthokeratology lens designs—Vision Shape Treatment (VST) and Corneal Reshaping Therapy (CRT)—in 56 subjects over one month.
  • Epithelial thickness significantly decreased in the central zone for both lens types after one day, while changes in the peripheral zone varied between the two groups over time.
  • The results showed a correlation between the power of the high convex zone of the lenses and the epithelial thickness changes, highlighting that different lens types affect corneal reshaping and remodeling differently.
