Objectives: Distant metastasis is the leading cause of death in patients with N2-3 nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). And aspirin is found to reduce metastasis and improve prognosis in some other malignancies, such as colorectal cancer. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical value of regular aspirin intake (RAI) in N2-3 NPC treated with standard chemoradiotherapy.

Materials And Methods: Totally 2064 patients diagnosed with TxN2-3M0 NPC from Jan. 2008 to Dec. 2015 and treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy were involved. According to RAI, these patients were divided into 2 groups between which a propensity score matching was made, with a ratio of 1:3 and a series of clinical characteristics (age, gender, T stage, N stage and EBV DNA) as covariates. Then survivals and acute toxicities were compared in the 464 matched patients.

Results: RAI appeared to bring better overall (87.7% vs. 79.6%, P = 0.031), metastasis-free (87.8% vs. 76.5%, P = 0.017) and disease-free (85.9% vs. 75.5%, P = 0.033) survivals. It simultaneously increased total incidences of myelosuppression (55.2% vs. 32.2%, P < 0.001), oral mucositis (60.3% vs. 38.2%, P < 0.001), cervical dermatitis (60.3% vs. 38.5%, P < 0.001) and xerostomia (49.1% vs. 33.3%, P = 0.002). But RAI failed to affect incidence of any grade 3/4 toxicity.

Conclusions: Post-diagnosis RAI might be a tolerable approach to control distant metastasis and provide survival benefit for N2-3 NPC in combination with standard chemoradiotherapy.

Background: The restriction of access to health services during the COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in self-medication. This study aims to examine mothers' use of nutrient supplements with over-the-counter (OTC) medications for their children, including instances of self-medication for themselves. The study also explores maternal characteristics associated with this behavior, the specific medications used, and the reasons for use.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to evaluate postpartum follow-up care for women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) in Japan, highlighting its importance for reducing future cardiovascular and metabolic disease risks.
  • A web-based survey conducted among postpartum women revealed low awareness of HDP-related risks, with only 56.2% knowing about cardiovascular disease risk and even fewer understanding metabolic syndrome risks or preventive measures.
  • The findings indicate that healthcare providers are not adequately informing patients, resulting in a lack of follow-up and awareness, emphasizing the need for better educational resources and follow-up protocols for women after pregnancy.

Nurses' knowledge to identify, prevent and manage hypertensive disorder of pregnancy.

S Afr Fam Pract (2004)

November 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, College of Health Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.

Background: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are major contributors to maternal mortality in South Africa. Preventative strategies in low- and middle-income countries emphasise frequent antenatal visits, symptom identification, patient education and the prophylactic use of calcium and low-dose aspirin to prevent HDP for nurses because they are the frontline workers at antenatal clinics countrywide.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study where a self-administered questionnaire was conducted among nurses (midwives and professional nurses) employed at hospitals and clinics in Durban, South Africa, to assess their understanding and practices regarding identification and initial management of HDP, particularly for eclampsia and PE with severe features.

Background: Patients requiring lower limb immobilisation after injury have an increased venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk. The extent of this risk in published studies varies. The TRiP(cast) model quantifies VTE risk using clinical parameters.

Inflammation, Frailty, and Aspirin Use in the Physicians' Health Study: A Pilot Study.

Whether anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin can lower the risk of frailty is an active area of investigation. In previous studies, we reported that regular aspirin use started in midlife was associated with a lower risk of frailty at older age. We therefore sought to further examine the relationship between inflammatory biomarkers, frailty and aspirin use in a pilot nested case-control study of 300 participants aged ≥60 years with available data to calculate a frailty index from the Physicians' Health Study, a completed randomized trial of aspirin that began in 1982.
