Article Abstract

Besides energy storage and membrane biogenesis, lipids are known for their numerous biological functions. The two essential lipids, diacylglycerol (DG) and phosphatidic acid (PA), are shown to be associated with cell signalling processes. In this study, we examined whether triglyceride-deficient yeast mutants (tgΔ), dga1Δ and dga1Δlro1Δ, may play an important role in mevalonate (MEV) pathway regulation. Our metabolite analyses revealed that tgΔ cells showed high levels of squalene (SQ) and ergosterol (ERG), which are key indicators of MEV pathway activity. In addition, gene expression studies indicated that the MEV pathway genes in tgΔ cells were significantly upregulated. Interestingly, tgΔ cells exhibited high diacylglycerol kinase1 (DGK1) expression. Furthermore, DGK1 overexpression in WT and tgΔ phenotypes causes a substantial elevation in SQ and ERG levels, and we also found a significant increase in transcript levels of MEV pathway genes, confirming the new role of DGK1 in MEV pathway regulation. This suggests that high DG phosphorylation activity increases the PA pool that may induce the upregulation of MEV pathway in tgΔ cells. The induced MEV pathway is one of the key strategies in the field of synthetic biology for improved production of terpenoids in yeast. Thus, to examine whether increased endogenous MEV pathway flux can be redirected to triterpenoid, β-Amyrin synthase gene was heterologously expressed in DGK1 overexpressing tgΔ cells that led to significant production of β-Amyrin, a natural triterpenoid. In conclusion, our findings provide a novel strategy to increase MEV pathway precursors by modulating endogenous signal lipids for improved production of terpenoids.

Based on density functional theory calculations, we propose a new pathway toward compounds featuring flat [AgF] layers which mimic [CuO] layers in high-temperature oxocuprate superconductor precursors. Calculations predict the dynamic (phonon) and energetic stability of the new phases over diverse substrates. For some compounds with ferro orbital ordering, we find a gigantic intrasheet superexchange constant of up to -211 meV (DFT+) and -256 meV (SCAN), calculated for hypothetical (CsMgF)KAgF intergrowth.

Twofold Anisotropic Superconductivity in Bilayer T_{d}-MoTe_{2}.

Phys Rev Lett

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wisconsin 53706, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Noncentrosymmetric two-dimensional superconductors like few-layer T_{d}-MoTe_{2} exhibit unique superconducting properties, including upper critical fields exceeding the Pauli limit by up to 600%.
  • The enhancement of these properties is still debated, with theories suggesting influences from either spin-orbit parity coupling or tilted Ising spin-orbit coupling.
  • In bilayer T_{d}-MoTe_{2}, experiments show superconductivity has a twofold symmetry influenced by magnetic and electric fields, and findings support tilted Ising spin-orbit coupling as the main mechanism.

Design of Two-Dimensional Hybrid Perovskites with Giant Spin Splitting and Persistent Spin Textures.

Semiconductors with large energetic separation Δ of energy sub-bands with distinct spin expectation values (spin textures) represent a key target to enable control over spin transport and spin-optoelectronic properties. While the paradigmatic case of symmetry-dictated Rashba spin splitting and associated spin textures remains the most explored pathway toward designing future spin-transport-based quantum information technologies, controlling spin physics beyond the Rashba paradigm by accessing strategically targeted crystalline symmetries holds significant promise. In this paper, we show how breaking the traditional paradigm of octahedron-rotation based structure distortions in 2D organic-inorganic perovskites (2D-OIPs) can facilitate exceptionally large spin splittings (Δ > 400 meV) and spin textures with extremely short spin helix lengths ( ∼ 5 nm).

The efficient use of land resources is key to achieving the dual goals of "carbon neutrality" and high-quality development while addressing the challenges of imbalance between ecological protection and economic development in river basins. This study combines remote sensing data with land use change modeling to generate maps of land use changes in the past and present, and by integrating the Grey multi-objective optimization-Patch-level land use simulation (GMOP-PLUS) model with the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP 6) development pathways, it has defined 12 target scenarios to simulate and predict the trends of changes over the next 30 years, providing a basis for formulating future land management policies. We found that from 1980 to 2020, grassland dominated (41%), with the largest increase in built-up land, and a decrease in unused land and cropland by 5.

Strong coupling in photonic microstructures attracts broad attention due to its promising applications in spectral control, optical sensing, and light-matter interactions. Herein, we demonstrate the coupling effect in the photonic multilayer with a planar nanocavity on a one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal (PC). The experiment results show that the spectral profile of the coupling effect can be effectively controlled by adjusting the thickness of the dielectric layer in the nanocavity, which is in good accordance with the calculations.
