Ring-enlargement reactions can provide a fast route towards the formation of six-membered single-ring or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). To investigate the participation of the cyclopentadienyl (CH) radical in ring-enlargement reactions in high-temperature environments, a mass-spectrometric study was conducted. Experimental access to the CH high-temperature chemistry was provided by two counterflow diffusion flames. Cyclopentene was chosen as a primary fuel given the large amount of resonantly stabilized cyclopentadienyl radicals produced by its decomposition and its high tendency to form PAHs. In a second experiment, methane was added to the fuel stream to promote methyl addition pathways and to assess the importance of ring-enlargement reactions for PAH growth. The experimental dataset includes mole fraction profiles of small intermediate hydrocarbons and of several larger species featuring up to four condensed aromatic rings. Results show that, while the addition of methane enhances the production of methylcyclopentadiene and benzene, the concentration of larger polycyclic hydrocarbons is reduced. The increase of benzene is probably attributable to the interaction between the methyl and the cyclopentadienyl radicals. However, the formation of larger aromatics seems to be dominated only by the cyclopentadienyl driven molecular-growth routes which are hampered by the addition of methane. In addition to the experimental work, two chemical mechanisms were tested and newly calculated reaction rates for cyclopentadiene reactions were included. In an attempt to assess the impact of cyclopentadienyl ring-enlargement chemistry on the mechanisms' predictivity, pathways to form benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene were investigated. Results show that the updated mechanism provides an improved agreement between the computed and measured aromatics concentrations. Nevertheless, a detailed study of the single reaction steps leading to toluene, styrene, and ethylbenzene would be certainly beneficial.

In this report, we describe a simple method for the synthesis of 2-aryl-2-vinyl-cyclobutanones through the reaction of in situ generated cyclopropanones and cinnamylsulfonium ylides, representing an example of a formal carbene insertion into these three-membered rings. The cyclobutanones thus obtained are ideal substrates for palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions upon enol triflate formation, thereby providing access to densely functionalized cyclobutenes. A mechanistic proposal for the ring-enlargement is presented based on experimental evidence.

As a novel synthetic method for unsymmetrical macrocycles, we herein developed a post-synthetic modification of calix[4]arenes by insertion of a terminal alkyne into an inert C(methylene)-C(aryl) bond of the macrocyclic framework. In this transformation, C-iridated calix[4]arenes, readily synthesized through C-H bond activation of the parent calix[4]arene, undergoes C(methylene)-C(aryl) bond cleavage followed by insertion of an alkyne to provide a ring-expanded calix[4]arene complex. Removal of the iridium metal from the resulting complex was readily accomplished by a simple treatment with an acid.

Strained compounds constitute a highly topical area of research in chemistry. Borirene and borirane both feature a BC three-membered ring. They can be viewed as the structural analogues of cyclopropane and cyclopropene, where a CH unit of the carbonaceous counterparts is replaced with BH, respectively.

An expedient construction of the 5-6-7 tricyclic core of daphnicyclidin-type alkaloids is described. The synthetically challenging cycloheptanone C ring was constructed via a Tiffeneau-Demjanov ring enlargement reaction from a 5-6-6 tricyclic precursor commonly found in calyciphylline A-type alkaloids. Other key transformations included Davis oxidation, 1,2-addition, oxidation, and dehydration to elaborate the essential cyclcohept-2-enone motif.

A series of dipeptides 1 was synthesized that at the N-site contained 3-(N-phthalimidoadamantane-1-carboxylic acid and at the C-site different aliphatic or aromatic L- or D-amino acids. The photochemical reaction of dipeptides 1 under acetone-sensitized conditions gave simple decarboxylation products 6, and decarboxylation-induced cyclization products 7, as well as some secondary products 8 and 9 formed by elimination of HO or ring enlargement, respectively. Molecules 9 undergo secondary photoinduced H-abstractions by the phthalimide chromophore, delivering more complex polycycles 11.
