We report herein that copper alkynyl nanoclusters show metal-core dependent properties a charge-transfer mechanism, which enables new understanding of their structure-property relationship. Initially, nanoclusters and bearing respective Cu(i) () and Cu(i) () cores were prepared and revealed to display near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence mainly from the mixed alkynyl → Cu(i) ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) and cluster-centered transition, and they further exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Subsequently, a vanadate-induced oxidative approach to generate a nucleating Cu(ii) cation led to assembly of and featuring respective [Cu(ii)O]@Cu(i) () and {[Cu(ii)O]·[VO]}@Cu(i) () cores. While interstitial occupancy of Cu(ii) triggers inter-valence charge-transfer (IVCT) from Cu(i) to Cu(ii) to quench the photoluminescence of and , such a process facilitates charge mobility to render them semiconductive. Overall, metal-core modification results in an interplay between charge-transfer processes to switch TADF to semiconductivity, which underpins an unusual structure-property correlation for designed synthesis of metal nanoclusters with unique properties and functions.

Fluorescent iron nanoclusters are emerging fluorescent nanomaterials. Herein, we synthesized hemoglobin-coated iron nanoclusters (Hb-Fe NCs) with a significant fluorescence emission peak at 615 nm and investigated the inner-filter effect of fluorescence induced by a manganese dioxide nanosheet (MnO NS). The fluorescence quenching of Hb-Fe NCs by a MnO NS can be significantly reversed by the addition of ascorbic acid.

Palladium-doped silver nanoclusters (NCs) have been highlighted for their unique physicochemical properties and potential applications in catalysis, optics, and electronics. Anion-directed synthesis offers a powerful route to control the morphology and properties of these NCs. Herein, we report a novel Pd-doped Ag NC, [Pd(H)Ag(S){SP(OPr)}] (), synthesized through the inclusion of sulfide and hydride anions.

Metal nanoclusters (NCs), owing to their atomic precision and unique molecule-like properties, have gained widespread attention for applications ranging from catalysis to bioimaging. In recent years, proteins, with their hierarchical structures and diverse functionalities, have emerged as good candidates for functionalizing metal NCs, rendering metal NC-protein conjugates with combined and even synergistically enhanced properties featured by both components. In this Perspective, we explore key questions regarding why proteins serve as complementary partners for metal NCs, the methodologies available for conjugating proteins with metal NCs, and the characterization techniques necessary to elucidate the structures and interactions within this emerging bionano system.

Electrochemically grown copper nanoclusters (CuNCs: < 3 nm) from single-atom catalysts have recently attracted intensive attention as electrocatalysts for CO2 and CO reduction reaction (CO2RR/CORR) because they exhibit distinct product selectivity compared with conventional Cu nanoparticles (typically larger than 10 nm). Herein, we conducted a detailed investigation into the size dependence of CuNCs on selectivity for multicarbon (C2+) production in CORR. These nanoclusters were electrochemically grown from single Cu atoms dispersed on covalent triazine frameworks (Cu-CTFs).

Open metal sites are crucial in catalysis. We have used a "loose coordination strategy" (LCS) to preorganize open metal sites in gold cluster catalysts. A gold nanocluster with composition of [Au26(3,4-Me2-Ph-form)9(iPr2-imy)3(Me2S)](BF4)2(iPr2-imy = 1,3-Diisopropylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 3,4-Me2-Ph-form = N,N'-Di(3,4-dimethyl-phenyl)formamidine) (Au26) has been obtained by one pot synthesis, i.
