The redox reaction mechanism of a poly(phenanthrene quinone)/graphene composite (PFQ/rGO) was investigated using operando attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy during cycling of Li and Mg batteries. The reference phenanthrene quinone and the Li and Mg salts of the hydroquinone monomers were synthesized and their IR spectra were measured. Additionally, IR spectra were calculated using DFT. A comparison of all three spectra allowed us to accurately assign the C=O and C-O vibration bands and confirm the redox mechanism of the quinone/Li salt of hydroquinone, with radical anion formation as the intermediate product. PFQ/rGO also showed exceptional performance in an Mg battery: A potential of 1.8 V versus Mg/Mg , maximum capacity of 186 mAh g (335 Wh kg of cathode material), and high capacity retention with only 8 % drop/100 cycles. Operando ATR-IR spectroscopy was performed in a Mg/organic system, revealing an analogous redox mechanism to a Li/organic cell.

Objective: This study aimed to identify structural changes in age-related curved hair (referred to as "YUGAMI" hair in Japanese) induced by cyclical extension using infrared (IR) spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics, such as multivariate curve resolution (MCR) and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS).
Methods: The hair fibres were stretched at a strain level of 0.3-N, and this operation was counted as one cycle and was repeated 500 cycles.

To address the pressing demand for hyphenated characterization of the electrode-electrolyte interfaces at the molecular level, we report herein a technical note to demonstrate the hyphenation of electrochemical surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) and shell-isolated nanoparticle enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS). The core setup incorporates a top-down configured Raman optic fiber head loaded on a 3-dimension positioning module and a bottom-up configured attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) spectroelectrochemical cell accommodated in a custom-designed optical accessory. The feasibility of this integrated design is initially validated by the simultaneous measurement of two model systems, namely, potential dependent adsorption of pyridine on a Au film electrode and the CO reduction reaction on a Cu film electrode by SEIRAS and SHINERS, yielding distinct and complementary spectral information.

Arsenic (As) pollution seriously threatens human and ecological health. Microalgal cell wall and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are known to interact with As, but their roles in the As resistance, accumulation and speciation in microalgae remain unclear. Here, we used two strains of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, namely CC-125 (wild type) and CC-503 (cell wall-deficient mutant), to examine the algal growth, EPS synthesis, As adsorption, absorption and transformation under 10-1000 µg/L As(III) and As(V) treatments for 96 h.

Polymers synthesized with end-of-life consideration allow for recovery and reprocessing. "Living-anionic polymerization (LAP)" and hydrosilylation reaction were utilized to synthesize hair-end furan functionalized hairy nanoparticles (HNPs) with a hard polystyrene (PS) core and soft polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) hairs via a one-pot approach. The synthesis was carried out by first preparing the living core through crosslinking styrene with divinylbenzene using sec-butyl lithium, followed by the addition of the hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3) monomer to the living core.

Nowadays, researchers are looking for green synthesis methods of polymers that solve the disadvantages of polymerization with different initiators and traditional methods. In this work, the self-polymerization process of benzidine by anodic exfloated graphene oxide Nanosheet electrode (AEGO Nsh) is reported for the first time in the world. The self-polymerization of benzidine onto AEGO Nsh electrode was done by an easy and simple method by anodizing the graphite sheet followed by immersing the AEGO Nsh electrode inside the benzidine monomer dissolved in organic and inorganic acid media.
