Estuaries and coastal environments are often regarded as a critical resource for the bioremediation of organic pollutants such as azo dyes due to their high abundance and diversity of extremophiles. Bioremediation through the activities of azoreductase, laccase, and other associated enzymes plays a critical role in the removal of azo dyes in built and natural environments. However, little is known about the biodegradation genes and azo dye degradation genes residing in sediments from coastal and estuarine environments. In this study, high-throughput sequencing (16S rRNA) of sediment DNA was used to explore the distribution of azo-dye degrading bacteria and their functional genes in estuaries and coastal environments. Unlike laccase genes, azoreductase (), and naphthalene degrading genes were ubiquitous in the coastal and estuarine environments. The relative abundances of most functional genes were higher in the summer compared to winter at locations proximal to the mouths of the Hanjiang River and its distributaries. These results suggested inland river discharges influenced the occurrence and abundance of azo dye degrading genes in the nearshore environments. Furthermore, the genes had a significant negative relationship with total organic carbon, Hg, and Cr ( < 0.05). This study provides critical insights into the biodegradation potential of indigenous microbial communities in nearshore environments and the influence of environmental factors on microbial structure, composition, and function which is essential for the development of technologies for bioremediation in azo dye contaminated sites.

This work represents a systematic computational study of structural and optoelectronic properties of 24 phenylazo-2-naphthol derivatives using the DFT-B3LYP/6-31 + G(d,p) method. The positional isomers of azo compounds have been designed by introducing an azophenyl unit (with and without substituents) at three different (1-, 3-, and 4-) positions of 2-naphthols. This result shows that depending on the linking position of the azophenyl unit and substituents (NO and maleimide), the -azo, -azo, and hydrazo forms of our substituted azo derivatives possess distinguished UV-vis absorption and charge-transfer properties compared to unsubstituted Sudan I derivatives.

Azo dyes constitute 60-70% of commercially used dyes and are complex, carcinogenic, and mutagenic pollutants that negatively impact soil composition, water bodies, flora, and fauna. Conventional azo dye degradation techniques have drawbacks such as high production and maintenance costs, use of hazardous chemicals, membrane clogging, and sludge generation. Constructed Wetland-Microbial Fuel Cells (CW-MFCs) offer a promising sustainable approach for the bio-electrodegradation of azo dyes from textile wastewater.

pH-responsive polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers are used as well-defined building blocks to design light-switchable nano-assemblies in solution. The complex interplay between the photoresponsive di-anionic azo dye Acid Yellow 38 (AY38) and the cationic PAMAM dendrimers of different generations is presented in this study. Electrostatic self-assembly involving secondary dipole-dipole interactions provides well-defined assemblies within a broad size range (10 nm-1 μm) with various shapes.

The design of efficient advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in the presence of bicarbonate has long attracted considerable attention in the field of environmental catalysis. In this study, sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO) as one of the most abundant substances in actual water, was introduced to a NaClO/Ru(III) system to enhance the removal of acid orange 7(AO7). NaHCO could significantly improve the removal efficiency of the Ru(III)/NaClO process in HCO at a pH range of 6.
