Palladium-catalyzed amination reactions using soluble organic bases have provided a solution to the many issues associated with heterogeneous reaction conditions. Still, homogeneous C-N cross-coupling approaches cannot yet employ bases as weak and economical as trialkylamines. Furthermore, organic base-mediated methods have not been developed for Ni(0/II) catalysis, despite some advantages of such systems over those employing Pd-based catalysts. We designed a new air-stable and easily prepared Ni(II) precatalyst bearing an electron-deficient bidentate phosphine ligand that enables the cross-coupling of aryl triflates with aryl amines using triethylamine (TEA) as base. The method is tolerant of sterically congested coupling partners, as well as those bearing base- and nucleophile-sensitive functional groups. With the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we determined that the electron-deficient auxiliary ligands decrease both the p of the Ni-bound amine and the barrier to reductive elimination from the resultant Ni(II)-amido complex. Moreover, we determined that the preclusion of Lewis acid-base complexation between the Ni catalyst and the base, due to steric factors, is important for avoiding catalyst inhibition.

In short-carbon-fiber-reinforced polyamide 66 articles shaped by 3D printing (3D-SCFRPA66), the interfaces between printed layers are often susceptible to damage, and the composite is excessively brittle. Therefore, a novel treatment for 3D-printed short-carbon-fiber-reinforced polyamide (3D-SCFRPA66) using homogeneous low-potential electron beam irradiation (HLEBI) to enhance tensile properties was investigated. In 3D-SCFRPA66 samples, ductility was measured based on the following parameters: strain at tensile strength (corresponding to homogeneous deformation) () and resistance energy to homogeneous deformation, a measure of toughness (), which were both substantially increased.

Phase separation of planetary ices explains nondipolar magnetic fields of Uranus and Neptune.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

December 2024

Department of Earth and Planetary Science, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720.

The Voyager spacecraft discovered that the ice giants Uranus and Neptune have nondipolar magnetic fields, defying expectations that a thick interior layer of planetary ices would generate strong dipolar fields. Stanley and Bloxham showed that nondipolar fields emerge if the magnetic field is only generated in a thin outer layer. However, the origin and composition of this dynamo active layer has so far remained elusive.

Excessive salt intake is associated with increased risks of cardiovascular disease, while directly reducing salt content significantly decreased the quality of meat. The objective of this study was to investigate the synergistic effects of sodium tripolyphosphate (STP) and ultrasound treatment on the gel properties of MP under low-salt conditions (0.3 M NaCl).

Organic matter processing by heterotrophic bacterioplankton in a large tropical river: Relating elemental composition and potential carbon mineralization.

PLoS One

November 2024

Grupo de Investigación en Limnología Tropical, FES Iztacala, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Tlalnepantla, Estado de México, México.

River hydrology shapes the sources, concentration, and stoichiometry of organic matter within drainage basins. However, our understanding of how the microbes process dissolved organic matter (DOM) and recycle nutrients in tropical rivers needs to be improved. This study explores the relationships between elemental DOM composition (carbon/nitrogen/phosphorus: C/N/P), C and N uptake, and C mineralization by autochthonous bacterioplankton in the Usumacinta River, one of the most important fluvial systems in Mexico.

First, a Brønsted acid ionic liquid (BAIL) in the role of a double acid-base called 1,3-n-propyl-bipyridinium bisulfonic acid-ditrifluoroacetate (PBPBSDT) was produced, and its skeleton was determined via TGA, mass, C NMR, F NMR, H NMR and FT-IR data. Further, it was successfully applied in the preparation of dibenzo-chromeno-phenazine-dione derivatives (1a-12a, 9-15 min, 90-98%) via one-pot multicomponent domino reaction among 2 mmol 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dione, 1 mmol benzene-1,2-diamine, and 1 mmol aldehydes under optimal conditions (5 mol% of PBPBSDT, solvent-free, 60 °C). The proper reproducibility of the PBPBSDT homogeneous catalyst (5 times), solvent-free medium, reasonable TON (Turnover Number) and TOF (Turnover Frequency) numbers, the non-metallic framework of the catalyst, and the formation of C-N, C = N, C-C, C = C, C-O bonds in a single operation are the distinct advantages of this protocol.
