Introduction: Fractures of the base of the fifth metatarsal bone present one of the commonest fractures of the metatarsal bones. Conventionally intramedullary screws and tension band wiring have been used as internal fixation methods. Lately hook plates have also served as an alternative fixation method. We hereby report on our experience with the hook plate used in treating fractures of the proximal fifth metatarsal.

Methods: 21 patients treated with the hook plate for proximal fifth metatarsal fractures were assessed clinically and radiologically.

Results: Average time to union in primarily treated fractures (n=18) was 7.7 weeks (range 4.5-16 weeks). Average time to return of activities of daily living (ADLs) was 10.3 weeks (range 4.5-37 weeks). The average AOFAS midfoot score was 30.4 preoperatively and 95.2 postoperatively (p<0.01).

Conclusion: The ulna hook plate presents a suitable and adequate method of osteosynthesis used to primarily treat proximal fifth metatarsal fractures requiring surgical intervention with satisfactory post-operative outcomes.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the outcomes of the use of a 2.7 mm semitubular hook plate for internal fixation of unstable metaphyseal ulnar fractures. Between January 2015 and July 2019, 30 consecutive patients with a recent unstable distal ulnar fracture were included in this prospective case series.

Morphogenesis of pteraspid heterostracan oral plates and the evolutionary origin of teeth.

Teeth are a key vertebrate innovation; their evolution is generally associated with the origin of jawed vertebrates. However, tooth-like structures already occur in jawless stem-gnathostomes; heterostracans bear denticles and morphologically distinct tubercles on their oral plates. We analysed the histology of the heterostracan denticles and plates to elucidate their morphogenesis and test their homology to the gnathostome oral skeleton.

Background: Dislocation of the acromioclavicular joint (ACJ), accounting for 9%-12% of all shoulder injuries, is a frequent shoulder problem. Clavicular hook plates have proven to be a successful implant choice for surgical management. The benefit of this method is that it preserves the diarthrosis of the ACJ while reducing dislocation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the best treatment options for displaced or comminuted fractures of the fifth metatarsal base by comparing three methods: ulnar hook plate fixation, immobilization, and early functional treatment.
  • Results showed that while the plate fixation group had better AOFAS and FADI scores at 1, 3, and 6 months, all treatments had similar outcomes after 12 months, with early functional treatment leading to quicker recovery times.
  • The study concluded that early functional treatment is recommended due to its effectiveness and rapid return to daily activities, despite some complications in the plate fixation group.

Background: Subacromial osteolysis is a typical complication following hook plate fixation for acromioclavicular (AC) dislocation. Many factors can affect the occurrence and progression of subacromial osteolysis (SAO). The objective of this study was to investigate the predictive value of the implant removal time and acromion-hook angle for subacromial osteolysis following hook plate fixation for AC dislocation.
