In this work we propose the use of statistical mixture design in the construction of a biosensor device based on graphite oxide, platinum nanoparticles and biomaterials obtained from Botryosphaeria rhodina MAMB-05. The biosensor was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Under optimized experimental parameters by factorial design, the biosensor was applied to the voltammetric determination of chlorogenic acid (CGA) measured as 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA). The biosensor response was linear (R = 0.998) for 5-CQA in the concentration range 0.56-7.3 µmol L, with limit of detection and quantification of 0.18 and 0.59 µmol L, respectively. The new biosensing device was applied to quality control analysis based upon the determination of CGA content in specialty and traditional coffee beverages. The results indicated that specialty coffee had a significantly higher content of CGA. Principal component analysis of the voltammetric fingerprint of brewed coffees revealed that the laccase-based biosensor can be used for their discrimination.

RNAs are central mediators of genetic information flow and gene regulation that underlie diverse cell types and cell states across species. Thus, methods that can sense and respond to RNA profiles in living cells will have broad applications in biology and medicine. CellREADR - Cell access through RNA sensing by Endogenous ADAR (adenosine deaminase acting on RNA), is a programmable RNA sensor-actuator technology that couples the detection of a cell-defining RNA to the translation of an effector protein to monitor and manipulate the cell.

Early and portable detection of pathogenic bacteria is crucial for ensuring food safety, monitoring product quality, and tracing the sources of bacterial infections. Moving beyond traditional plate-culture counting methods, the analysis of active bacterial components offers a rapid means of quantifying bacteria. Here, metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived NiCo-layered double hydroxide nanosheets (LDHs), synthesized via the Kirkendall effect, were employed as highly effective oxidase mimics to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS).

This study illustrates the utility of a mixed-methods approach in assessing the value of an example novel technology-biosensor-integrated self-reporting arteriovenous grafts (smart AVGs). Currently in preclinical development, the device will detect arteriovenous graft stenosis (surveillance-only use case) and treat stenosis (interventional use case). The approach to value assessment adopted in this study was multifaceted, with one stage informing the next and comprised a stakeholder engagement with clinical experts to explore the device's clinical value, a cost-utility analysis (CUA) from a US Medicare perspective to estimate pricing headroom, and an investment model estimating risk-adjusted net present value analysis (rNPVs) to determine commercial viability.

The exchange bias (EB) effect is a fundamental magnetic phenomenon, in which the exchange bias field/coercive field ratio (|H/H|) can improve the stability of spintronic devices. Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic heterostructures have the potential to construct low-power and high-density spintronic devices, while their typically air unstable and |H/H| lesser, limiting the possibility of applications. Here, 2D CrTe nanosheets have been systematically synthesized with an in situ formed ≈2 nm-thick Te doped CrO layer (Te-CrO) on the upper surface by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method.

A label-free, flexible, and disposable aptasensor was designed for the rapid on-site detection of vancomycin (VAN) levels. The electrochemical sensor was based on lab-printed carbon electrodes (C-PE) enriched with cauliflower-shaped gold nanostructures (AuNSs), on which VAN-specific aptamers were immobilized as biorecognition elements and short-chain thiols as blocking agents. The AuNSs, characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), enhanced the electrochemical properties of the platform and the aptamer immobilization active sites.
