Incorporating tungsten into the N3 core of a N-fused porphyrin (NFP; 1) affords high-valent tungsten(VI)-NFP complexes, WClO -1 and 21-chlorinated WClO -3. The X-ray structure of WClO -1 reveals a distorted octahedral geometry with sitting atop metal coordination. The absorption spectrum of WClO -1 displays bathochromically shifted Q-like bands beyond 1000 nm, indicating an inherently narrow HOMO-LUMO energy gap. DFT calculations show that the degeneracy of the LUMO and LUMO+1 pair of 1 is significantly resolved by the tungsten(VI) coordination. Conclusively, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry provide a rationale for the narrow HOMO-LUMO energy gap in the "16-electron" d tungsten(VI)-NFP complexes.

Single-site molecular electrocatalysts, especially those that perform catalytic conversion of N to NH under mild conditions, are highly desirable to derive fundamental structure-activity relations and as potential alternatives to the current energy-consuming Haber-Bosch ammonia production process. Combining theoretical calculations with experimental evidence, it has been shown that easily reducible cobalt porphyrins catalyze the six-electron, six-proton reduction of dinitrogen to NH at neutral pH and under ambient conditions. Two easily reducible N-fused cobalt porphyrins - CoNHF and CoNHF(Br) - reveal NRR activity with Faradic efficiencies between 6-7.

Herein, we report the design, synthesis, structure, and electrochemical study of doubly C-B-N fused Ni(II) porphyrins (1-trans, 1-cis, 2-trans, and 2-cis). These compounds have been synthesized from AB type dipyridyl Ni(II) porphyrins (Ar=Ph for 1 a; Ar=CF for 2 a) via Lewis base-directed electrophilic aromatic borylation reactions. The solution state structures of these compounds have been established using H NMR, B NMR, H-H COSY, H-C HSQC, and F-C HSQC NMR techniques.

5,15-Bis(pyrimidin-2-ylthio)porphyrins have been synthesized. Their electrochemical oxidation leads to the formation of mono- and bis-C-N-fused thiopyrimidinium intermediates depending on the applied charge and potential. These latter undergo nucleophilic attack with water during workup that drives the ring opening of the pyrimidinium moiety.
