The hypersonic phonon propagation in large-area two-dimensional colloidal crystals is probed by spontaneous micro Brillouin light scattering. The dispersion relation of thermally populated Lamb waves reveals multiband filtering due to three distinct types of acoustic band gaps. We find Bragg gaps accompanied by two types of hybridization gaps in both sub- and superwavelength regimes resulting from contact-based resonances and nanoparticle eigenmodes, respectively. The operating GHz frequencies can be tuned by particle size and depend on the adhesion at the contact interfaces. The experimental dispersion relations are well represented by a finite element method model enabling identification of observed modes. The presented approach also allows for contactless study of the contact stiffness of submicrometer particles, which reveals size effect deviating from macroscopic predictions.

We examine the collective motion in computational models of a two-dimensional dusty plasma crystal and a charged colloidal suspension as they approach their respective melting transitions. To unambiguously identify rearrangement events in the crystal, we map the trajectory of configurations from an equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation to the corresponding sequence of configurations of local potential energy minima ("inherent structures"). This inherent structure (IS) trajectory eliminates the ambiguity that arises from localized vibrational motion.

Over the last decades, the release and occurrence of organic pollutants in aquatic systems have become a major global concern due to their bioaccumulation, toxicity, and adverse effects on the ecosystem. Tetracycline (TC), a widely used antibiotic, is often found at high concentrations in the aqueous environment and tends to bind with the natural colloids. Post-COVID-19 pandemic, the release of surfactants in the environment has increased due to the excessive use of washing and cleaning products.

The design and screening of low cost and high efficiency oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is vital in the realms of fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Existing studies largely rely on the calculation of absorption free energy, a method established 20 years ago by Jens K. Nørskov.

Two-dimensional metal-organic framework (2D MOF) materials have significant development prospects in the technology of urea-assisted water electrolysis for hydrogen production. However, the poor conductivity, low mass permeability, and stability have limited their development in electrocatalysis. Here, CoFe-BDC is synthesized using layered double hydroxides (LDH) as the template.

Fe-N-C catalysts have emerged as the most promising alternatives to commercial Pt/C catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their cost-effectiveness and favorable activity. Herein, a dual-site Fe/FeN-NC catalyst was synthesized via a green, in situ doping strategy using two-dimensional Fe-doped ZIF-L as a nitrogen-rich precursor. The catalyst integrated Fe nanoparticles (NPs) and FeN sites anchored on carbon nanotubes, intertwined with nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanosheets, achieving a high active site density and graphitisation.
