Multiply-charged clusters with compact sizes that are stable in the gas phase are important due to their potential applications as weakly-coordinating ions and building blocks of bulk materials. However, the number of these clusters, especially those with high charge states beyond two, is limited. In this work, we show that gas-phase di- and tri-anions with record-high stability and compactness can be developed by utilizing a series of stable mono-anions with linear configurations as ligands. A stable di-anion with a record-high second electron binding energy of 6.26 eV and the smallest tri-anion with a record-low radius of 4.85 Å have been identified. This study demonstrates that multiply-charged clusters with highly charged state and compact sizes can be stabilized solely by selected terminal groups in the structure. This finding significantly enriches the database of stable multiply-charged gas-phase clusters and provides a path towards rational design of further multiply-charged species.

Formation of Doubly and Triply Charged Fullerene Dimers in Superfluid Helium Nanodroplets.

Sequential ionization of fullerene cluster ions (C_{60})_{n}^{+} within multiply charged helium nanodroplets leads to the intriguing phenomenon of forming and stabilizing doubly and triply charged fullerene oligomers. While the formation of doubly charged dimers (C_{60})_{2}^{2+} has been predicted in earlier studies, the observation of even triply charged ones (C_{60})_{2}^{3+} is highly surprising. This remarkable resilience against Coulomb explosion is achieved through efficient cooling within the superfluid environment of helium nanodroplets and a sequential ionization scheme that populates covalently bound or physisorbed fullerene dimers.

We report kinetic energies (KE) of multiply charged atomic ions (MCAI) from interactions of moderately intense nanosecond lasers at 532 nm with argon containing clusters, including neat and doped clusters with a trace amount of trichlorobenzene. We develop a mathematical method to retrieve speed and thereby kinetic energy information from analyzing the time-of-flight profiles of the MCAI. This method should be generally applicable in detections of energetic charged particles with high velocities, a realm where velocity map imaging is inadequate.

Mixed Cluster Ions of Magnesium and C.

Institut für Ionenphysik und Angewandte Physik, Universität Innsbruck, Technikerstr. 25, A-6020 Innsbruck, Austria.

Magnesium clusters exhibit a pronounced nonmetal-to-metal transition, and the neutral dimer is exceptionally weakly bound. In the present study, we formed pristine Mg ( = 1-100, = 1-3) clusters and mixed (C)Mg clusters ( = 1-7, = 1, 2) upon electron irradiation of neutral helium nanodroplets doped with magnesium or a combination of C and magnesium. The mass spectra obtained for pristine magnesium cluster ions exhibit anomalies, consistent with previous reports in the literature.

Salt cluster ions produced by electrospray ionization are used for mass calibration and fundamental investigations into cluster stability and charge separation processes. However, previous studies have been limited to relatively small clusters owing to the heterogeneity associated with large, multiply-charged clusters that leads to unresolved signals in conventional / spectra. Here, charge detection mass spectrometry is used to measure both the mass and charge distributions of positively charged clusters of KCl, CaCl, and LaCl with masses between ∼1 and 10 MDa by dynamically measuring the energy per charge, /, charge, and mass of simultaneously trapped individual ions throughout a 1 s trapping time.

Solvation of cationic copper clusters in molecular hydrogen.

Phys Chem Chem Phys

Institut für Ionenphysik und Angewandte Physik, Universität Innsbruck, Technikerstraße 25, Innsbruck 6020, Austria.

Multiply charged superfluid helium nanodroplets are utilized to facilitate the growth of cationic copper clusters (Cu, where = 1-8) that are subsequently solvated with up to 50 H molecules. Production of both pristine and protonated cationic Cu clusters are detected mass spectrometrically. A joint effort between experiment and theory allows us to understand the nature of the interactions determining the bonding between pristine and protonated Cu and Cu cations and molecular hydrogen.
