[Metastatic neuroblastoma with secondary hypersecretion of vasoactive intestinal peptide].

Pediatrie

Unité de réanimation pédiatrique, hôpital Edouard-Herriot, Lyon, France.

Published: January 1989

A 18-month-old boy with stage 4 neuroblastoma needed intensive care because of prerenal acute renal failure related to an intractable watery diarrhoea syndrome occurring 10 months after the diagnosis of the primary tumor. This diarrhoea was in relation with a late hyperproduction of vasoactive intestinal peptide by the relapsing neuroblastoma itself and stopped with intravenous somatostatin administration.

Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) is used for the management of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) not responsive to somatostatin analogs. In this case series, we report two patients with pancreatic vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)-secreting NETs (VIPomas) not responsive to any other therapies who achieved symptomatic control and a significant decrease in serum VIP levels with PRRT during their hospital stay. Two patients with VIPomas were admitted to the hospital with multiple prior hospital admissions after going through multiple lines of therapy.

Department of General & Neonatal Surgery, Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, National Clinical Research Center for Child Health and Disorders, Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Child Development and Disorders, Chongqing Key Laboratory of Structural Birth Defect and Reconstruction, Chongqing, China.

Purpose: To investigate the clinical features of necrotizing enterocolitis-associated intestinal perforation (NEC-IP) in neonates with different gestational ages (GAs). Furthermore, we also want to identify the risk factors of poor prognosis for these patients.

Methods: The retrospective study of patients with NEC-IP was conducted with basic information, comorbidity, intraoperative findings, related treatment, and prognosis.

Cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) regulates synaptic transmission through presynaptic receptors in nerve terminals, and its physiological roles are of clinical relevance. The cellular sources and synaptic targets of CB1-expressing terminals in the human cerebral cortex are undefined. We demonstrate a variable laminar pattern of CB1-immunoreactive axons and electron microscopically show that CB1-positive GABAergic terminals make type-2 synapses innervating dendritic shafts (69%), dendritic spines (20%) and somata (11%) in neocortical layers 2-3.

Social hierarchies are a common form of social organization across species. Although hierarchies are largely stable across time, animals may socially ascend or descend within hierarchies depending on environmental and social challenges. Here, we develop a novel paradigm to study social ascent and descent within male CD-1 mouse social hierarchies.
