Background: Differential susceptibility model hypothesizes that a genotype need not be unfavorable all the time as postulated in stress-diathesis model but can be beneficial in a supportive context. Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (rs18000795) within the promoter region of interleukin-6 (IL-6) gene was earlier noted to have a differential susceptibility on hippocampal volume in schizophrenia (SCZ).
Materials And Methods: We examined antipsychotic-naïve/free SCZ patients ( = 35) in comparison with healthy controls ( = 68). Hippocampus volumes were assessed in 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging using voxel-based morphometry. Region of interest analysis was done using hippocampus mask. IL-6 SNP (rs1800795) was genotyped using TaqMan allelic discrimination assay.
Results: A significantly deficient right ( = 3.03; = 392; = 0.04) and left ( = 3.03; = 47; = 0.03) hippocampal gray matter volumes were noted in SCZ patients after controlling for the potential confounding effects of age, sex, and total brain volume. There was a significant diagnosis x rs1800795 genotype interaction involving both left ( = 2.17, = 95, = 0.02) and right ( = 1.82, = 29, = 0.04) hippocampal volumes. Patients with GG (left: =5.78; = 0.02; right: =6.21; = 0.01) but not GC/CC genotype (left: =0.89; = 0.34; right: <0.01; = 0.95) had volume depletion.
Conclusion: A paradoxical smaller hippocampal volume with GG genotype was noted in SCZ. Further elucidation of its mechanistic basis might have translational implications.

This investigation begins with a literature review examining the spectrum of responses through the lens of the default mode network (DMN). To build upon this literature, a systematic exploratory study was incorporated, examining DMN-related neuropsychological functioning of 27 participants (16 trauma-exposed, and 11 non-trauma-exposed), with a subset (15 participants) completing neuroimaging.

Background: In small cell lung cancer (SCLC), limiting the radiation dose in the hippocampus area during preventive cranial irradiation (PCI) can reduce nerve injury and cognitive decline. This study was done to compare changes in cognitive functions between hippocampal-protected (3D-H) and non-hippocampal-protected (3D) patients during PCI.
Materials And Methods: the study group included 113 patients with SCLC qualified to PCI divided in two subgroups: 3D-H (n = 74) and 3D (n = 39).

Objective: Age-related hippocampal atrophy is associated with memory loss in older adults, and certain hippocampal subfields are more vulnerable to age-related atrophy than others. Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) may be an important protective factor for preserving hippocampal volume, but little is known about how CRF relates to the volume of specific hippocampal subfields, and whether associations between CRF and hippocampal subfield volumes are related to episodic memory performance. To address these gaps, the current study evaluates the associations among baseline CRF, hippocampal subfield volumes, and episodic memory performance in cognitively unimpaired older adults from the Investigating Gains in Neurocognition Trial of Exercise (IGNITE) (NCT02875301).
