Introduction: Triatomine bugs are vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease.

Methods: Triatomine bugs were collected and identified following established protocols. In addition, infection with T. cruzi was detected by microscopic and molecular analysis.

Results: We captured an adult male specimen of the Eratyrus cuspidatus species that has not been reported in the state of Campeche.

Conclusions: This finding provides new information on the distribution of E. cuspidatus in Mexico. However, more studies are needed to determine their epidemiological significance.

Article Synopsis
  • Chagas disease is a significant neglected health issue in Colombia, particularly in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta region, prompting a study to analyze transmission networks of the Trypanosoma cruzi parasite.
  • Researchers collected triatomine insects to study their blood sources, parasite diversity, and gut microbiota using advanced sequencing techniques, identifying 22 different blood sources and noting extensive connections between wildlife and domestic animals as hosts.
  • The findings revealed a unified transmission cycle of T. cruzi, primarily involving the TcI strain, indicating the need for integrated control strategies that target all vector species and their interactions with human populations rather than focusing solely on domestic habitats.

Centro de Investigaciones en Microbiología y Parasitología Tropical, CIMPAT, Departamento de Ciencias Biológicas, Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá, D.C., Colombia.

Introduction: From 2011 to 2016, 24 cases of Chagas disease were reported in Córdoba according to the national public health surveillance system (Sistema Nacional de Vigilancia en Salud Pública, Sivigila), but the information regarding Trypanosoma cruzi circulating strains and infection rates are unknown.

Objectives: To establish the triatomine species with which people come in contact and recognize as Chagas disease vectors, as well as to assess the infection with trypanosomes and make an exploratory approach to host feeding preferences with the participation of the local community.

Materials And Methods: Triatomines sampling was conducted in 12 municipalities between 2011 and 2016; T.

Trypanosoma cruzi Infection in Rhodnius pallescens (Heteroptera: Reduviidae) Infesting Coyol Palms in the Dry Arch of Panamá.

J Med Entomol

May 2018

Departamento de Investigación en Parasitología, Instituto Gorgas de Estudios de la Salud (ICGES), Ciudad de Panamá, República de Panamá.

Ecoepidemiological scenarios for Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas transmission are partially shaped by kissing bug vector ecology. The presence of Attalea butyracea Kunth, the 'royal palm', is a major risk factor for Chagas disease transmission in Panamá given their frequent infestations by Rhodnius pallescens Barber, a major neotropical T. cruzi vector.
