Background: Here we present the data obtained from the samples collected as part of a large research project (MACDIV) which aims at understanding the drivers of spider (Araneae) community assembly in Macaronesian islands. To obtain the data, we applied the sampling protocol COBRA (Conservation Oriented Biodiversity Rapid Assessment), in twelve 50 m x 50 m native forest plots and five dry habitat plots on the island of Madeiraand in 5 dry habitat plots on the island of Porto Santo. Through this publication, we contribute to the knowledge of the arachnofauna of the Madeiran archipelago.

New Information: From the samples that we collected, we obtained a total of 14,902 specimens, of which 49% were adults (7,263). We identified these specimens to 87 species and 18 morphospecies (undescribed), belonging to 26 families. Species of the family Linyphiidae dominated the samples, with 24 (morpho)species. Out of the 105 recorded (morpho)species, 34 were endemic, 26 native non-endemic, 22 introduced and 23 species of unknown origin. We report seven new records of possibly recently introduced species in the Madeiran archipelago. We also present 21 new records for Madeira island and 32 for Porto Santo (33 for the whole archipelago).

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a well-established treatment for severe aortic stenosis, especially in patients over 75 or those at high surgical risk. While these prosthetic valves have a lower thrombogenic profile than mechanical heart valves, leaflet thrombosis in transcatheter aortic valves (TAV) occurs in an estimated 5%-40% of cases. Most TAV thromboses are subclinical and can be detected via cardiac computed tomography (CCT), which reveals hypo-attenuating leaflet thickening and reduced leaflet motion in asymptomatic patients without elevated transprosthetic gradients on echocardiography.

Background: Limited data is available to evaluate the burden of device associated healthcare infections (HAI) [central line associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI), catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI), and ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP)] in low and-middle-income countries. Our aim is to investigate the population attributable mortality fraction and the absolute mortality difference of HAI in a broad population of critically ill patients from Brazil.

Methods: Multicenter cohort study from September 2019 to December 2023 with prospective individual patient data collection.

Article Synopsis
  • The Portuguese clinical guidelines recommend 24 hours of hospital monitoring for patients with traumatic brain injuries, even when initial CT scans are normal, despite evidence suggesting this may be unnecessary and potentially harmful.
  • A study analyzed the costs and outcomes of this practice, comparing data from 440 patients admitted in 2022, where only 0.5% developed new intracranial lesions during a 24-hour observation period and one patient (0.2%) died from unrelated causes.
  • The current monitoring protocol cost €163,157, significantly more than the hypothetical scenario of discharging patients after an initial normal CT scan, which would have cost €29,480, highlighting a difference of €133,677.
