Bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane motifs have gained increasing popularity in medicinal chemistry as bioisosteres because of their ability to impact key physicochemical properties. However, reports of direct C(sp)-C(sp) cross-coupling of these fragments to afford biaryl isosteres have been scarce. Herein we describe the development of continuous flow-enabled synthesis of bench-stable bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane trifluoroborate salts. Furthermore, we demonstrate the use of metallaphotoredox conditions to enable cross-coupling of these building blocks with complex aryl halide substrates.

Volatile fatty acid (VFA) rich streams from fermentation of organic residuals and wastewater are suitable feedstocks for mixed microbial culture (MMC) Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production. However, many such streams have low total VFA concentration (1-10 gCOD/L). PHA accumulation requires a flow-through bioprocess if the VFAs are not concentrated.

The implementation of continuous flow in paper-based analytical devices (PADs) was challenging because of the large-volume introduction that was created; but this allowed for the development of novel types of PADs for preconcentration, separation, and sensitive detection. In this study, pump-free continuous flow was applied to a distance-based PAD for the determination of iron ions. Continuous flow enabled the introduction of a volume that exceeded what was necessary to fill the hydrophilic channel of a PAD.

One-dimensional nanowires enable the realization of optical and electronic nanodevices that may find applications in energy conversion and storage systems. Herein, large-scale aligned DNA nanowires were crafted by flow-enabled self-assembly (FESA). The highly oriented and continuous DNA nanowires were then capitalized on either as a template to form metallic nanowires by exposing DNA nanowires that had been preloaded with metal salts to an oxygen plasma or as a scaffold to direct the positioning and alignment of metal nanoparticles and nanorods.

The effects of beta-adrenoceptor blockade, duration of ischaemia and preceding ischaemic periods on ischaemia-induced changes in myocardial K+ balance were studied in 12 open-chest pigs. Coronary venous blood was directed through a shunt from the coronary sinus to the right atrium. Continuous recordings of arterial, shunt blood [K+] and shunt flow enabled us to compute myocardial K+ balance during and after consecutive 2-, 2-, 5-, 10- and 2-min periods of regional ischaemia separated by 30 min of reperfusion.
