Article Synopsis
  • The World Health Assembly set six global nutrition targets (GNTs) in 2012 to improve maternal and child health, but there has been no comprehensive report detailing progress from 2012 to 2021.
  • A study evaluated the prevalence and impact of these nutrition targets across 204 countries using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021 and projected future trends up to 2050.
  • By 2021, only a few countries met some GNTs; most showed increased child overweight and notable decreases in female anaemia, highlighting a connection between societal development status and nutritional challenges.

Importance: Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is a rare and lethal cancer. Although progress has been made in recent years in patients with mutated BRAF tumors, those who respond initially eventually die of their disease; furthermore, there are no approved therapies for non-BRAF mutated tumors.

Objective: To determine whether treatment with matched-targeted therapy plus immune checkpoint inhibitors were associated with improved overall survival (OS).

Importance: In the neurotypical brain, regions develop in coordinated patterns, providing a fundamental scaffold for brain function and behavior. Whether altered patterns contribute to clinical profiles in neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism, remains unclear.

Objectives: To examine if, in autism, brain regions develop differently in relation to each other and how these differences are associated with molecular/genomic mechanisms and symptomatology.

Identification of copy-number variants in patients with overgrowth disorders.

Clin Genet

November 2024

CIBERER, Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Raras, Madrid, Spain.

Overgrowth syndromes (OGS) comprise a heterogeneous group of disorders whose main characteristic is that the weight, height or the head circumference are above the 97th centile or 2-3 standard deviations above the mean for age, gender, and ethnic group. Several copy-number variants (CNVs) have been associated with the development of OGS, such as the 5q35 microdeletion or the duplication of the 15q26.1-qter, among many others.

GH Treatment in Children of Normal Height.

J Clin Endocrinol Metab

September 2024

Disciplina de Endocrinologia, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo, Unidade de Endocrinologia do Desenvolvimento, Laboratório de Hormônios e Genética Molecular/LIM42, Hospital das Clínicas, São Paulo 05403-900, Brazil.

The increased availability of recombinant human GH (rhGH), albeit at a relatively high cost, has increased a demand for treatment of children and adolescents of normal height to increase their adult stature. There are no scientific reports on the efficacy and safety of rhGH therapy in this condition; therefore, the authors comment on the possible causes and consequences based on their personal opinion and experience. As in gigantism, when GH action and end-organ are normal, enough GH is expected to result in increased growth velocity.
