The aim of the study was to comparatively assess delafloxacin and levofloxacin activities against 96 anaerobic and some microaerophilic isolates. Delafloxacin minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were strikingly lower than those of levofloxacin. Delafloxacin MIC against clostridia, other Gram-positive rods, anaerobic/microaerophilic cocci and Gram-negative rods were 0.75, 0.032, 0.38 and 0.5 μg/mL, respectively. The highest (≥4 μg/mL) MICs of the newer fluoroquinolone were found in only 4.2% of isolates versus 46.9% by levofloxacin. The present results and the potency in acidic conditions showed delafloxacin advantages over levofloxacin in terms of usefulness for treatment of mixed anaerobic-aerobic infections and activity against Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile.

Background/objectives: Several independent studies have associated prostate cancer (PCa) with specific groups of bacteria, most of them reporting the presence of anaerobic or microaerophilic species such as (). Such findings suggest a prostate cancer-related bacterial dysbiosis, in a manner similar to the association between infection and gastric cancer. In an earlier exploratory study looking for such dysbiosis events, using a culturomics approach, we discovered that the presence of obligate anaerobes (OAs) along with was associated with increased prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in 39 participants.

The early evolution of eukaryotes and their adaptations to low-oxygen environments are fascinating open questions in biology. Genome-scale data from novel eukaryotes, and particularly from free-living lineages, are the key to answering these questions. The Parabasalia are a major group of anaerobic eukaryotes that form the most speciose lineage of Metamonada.

Article Synopsis
  • Coral polyps have specialized gastrovascular cavities (GVCs) filled with microbes that help with digestion and protection against pathogens, but these microbial communities are not well understood due to sampling challenges.* -
  • Researchers developed new methods to study the GVC microbiome from different coral species, revealing prevalent anaerobic or microaerophilic bacteria in these environments, even under bright light conditions.* -
  • The study suggests that coral GVCs share similarities with the guts of higher animals, implying that understanding their microbiomes could lead to new strategies to enhance coral resilience in the face of climate change.*

Bile salt hydrolase (BSH), a pivotal enzyme in cholesterol management, holds significant promise in both human and animal subjects. This study investigated the effect of fermentation dynamics in Heyndrickxia coagulans ATCC 7050 and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum ATCC 10012 to enhance BSH production. Cultivation of cultures in MRS and M17 media revealed that MRS medium enhanced BSH production by 235.

species are gram-positive filamentous non-acid fast anaerobic to microaerophilic bacteria that belong to human oral, gastrointestinal, and urogenital tract flora. Cervicofacial, abdominopelvic, and pulmonary infections are the most common presentations. Hematogenous spread is extremely rare and has been associated with .
