Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a complex and heterogeneous cardiac disorder, often complicated by cardiogenic shock, a life-threatening condition marked by severe cardiac output failure. Managing cardiogenic shock in HCM patients presents unique challenges due to the distinct pathophysiology of the disease, which includes dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, diastolic dysfunction, and myocardial ischemia. This review discusses current and emerging therapeutic strategies tailored to address the complexities of HCM-associated cardiogenic shock and other diseases with similar pathophysiology that provoke left ventricular outflow tract obstruction.

Division of Acute Care Surgery, Department of Surgery, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN, USA; Critical Illness, Brain Dysfunction, And Survivorship (CIBS) Center, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN, USA; Surgical Service, Nashville VA Medical Center, Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, Nashville, TN, USA.

Background: Prior research suggests that plasma may improve outcomes in traumatic brain injury (TBI). We examined the association between plasma administration and mortality in moderate-severe TBI in a large retrospective cohort, hypothesizing plasma is associated with decreased mortality after accounting for confounding covariates.

Materials And Methods: Patients from the 2017-2020 Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) dataset ≥18 years with moderate-severe TBI were included.

A 73-year-old man presented with nausea, abdominal discomfort, and distention persisting for the past five days. He had previously been diagnosed with stage III peripheral CD4+ T cell lymphoma and had initiated chemotherapy comprising vincristine two weeks prior to presentation. An evaluation revealed diffuse colon distention and pneumatosis intestinalis without mechanical obstruction, consistent with acute colonic pseudo-obstruction.

Background: Cardiovascular and renal complications of type 2 diabetes are the main causes of death in diabetic patients. Clinical studies have found that polyethylene glycol loxenatide (PEG-Loxe), a GLP-1 analog widely used to treat type 2 diabetes, boosts renal and cardiac functions in diabetic patients. However, its mechanism of action remains to be elucidated.
