The effective population size ( ) is a key parameter in conservation and evolutionary biology, reflecting the strength of genetic drift and inbreeding. Although demographic estimations of are logistically and time-consuming, genetic methods have become more widely used due to increasing data availability. Nonetheless, accurately estimating remains challenging, with few studies comparing estimates across molecular markers types and estimators such as single-sample methods based on linkage disequilibrium or sibship analyses versus methods based on temporal variance in allele frequencies.

Cognitive benefits of folic acid supplementation during pregnancy track with epigenetic changes at an imprint regulator.

BMC Med

December 2024

School of Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Sciences Research Institute, Ulster University, Coleraine, Northern Ireland, BT52 1SA, UK.

Background: The human ZFP57 gene is a major regulator of imprinted genes, maintaining DNA methylation marks that distinguish parent-of-origin-specific alleles. DNA methylation of the gene itself has shown sensitivity to environmental stimuli, particularly folate status. However, the role of DNA methylation in ZFP57's own regulation has not been fully investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • Cronartium pini is a fungus causing blister rust in Scots pine, existing in two forms: a heteroecious form that infects both pine and an alternate host, and an autoecious form that only infects pine.
  • The study used microsatellite markers to analyze the diversity and structure of 396 C. pini isolates in Sweden, revealing significant differences between the heteroecious and autoecious populations in terms of genetic diversity and structure.
  • Heteroecious isolates had distinct genetic profiles indicating sexual reproduction, while autoecious isolates were more genetically similar, suggesting they reproduce clonally and may have originated from self-fertilization.

This study aimed to explore the effect of observation, microsurgery, and radiotherapy for patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS). We searched PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane library from their establishment to July 31, 2024. 34 non-RCTs and 1 RCT that included 6 interventions were analyzed.

Should we delay leaf water potential measurements after excision? Dehydration or equilibration?

BMC Plant Biol

November 2024

Department of Botany, Ecology and Plant Physiology, Universidad de La Laguna (ULL), La Laguna, Canary Islands, 38200, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • Accurate determination of leaf water potential (Ψ) is essential for studying plant responses to water scarcity, as excised leaves show a decline in Ψ even under low evaporative conditions.
  • Using different storage methods, the decline in leaf Ψ was significantly reduced when leaves were covered with a hydrophobic layer, which also affected their relative water content.
  • The study found that although water loss during storage varied between different plant species, minimizing this loss ensured that pre-excision transpiration did not influence Ψ determination, indicating that the rapid dissipation of water potential disequilibrium does not lead to an overestimation of leaf Ψ post-excision.
