In this Letter we show that a bifurcation cascade and fully sustained turbulence can share the phase space of a fluid flow system, resulting in the presence of competing stable attractors. We analyze the toroidal pipe flow, which undergoes subcritical transition to turbulence at low pipe curvatures (pipe-to-torus diameter ratio) and supercritical transition at high curvatures, as was previously documented. We unveil an additional step in the bifurcation cascade and provide evidence that, in a narrow range of intermediate curvatures, its dynamics competes with that of sustained turbulence emerging through subcritical transition mechanisms.

We study a bifurcation scenario that corresponds to the transition from bursting activity to spiking in a phenomenological model of neuron-astrocyte interaction in neuronal populations. In order to do this, we numerically obtain one-dimensional Poincaré return map and highlight its bifurcation structure using an analytically constructed piecewise smooth model map. This map reveals the existence of a cascade of period-adding bifurcations, leading to a bursting-spiking transition via blue sky catastrophe.

Plants have evolved photoreceptors to optimize their development during primary growth, including germination, hypocotyl elongation, cotyledon opening, and root growth, allowing them to adapt to challenging light conditions. The light signaling transduction pathway during seedling establishment has been extensively studied, but little molecular evidence is available for light-regulated secondary growth, and how light regulates cambium-derived tissue production remains largely unexplored. Here, we show that CRYPTOCHROME (CRY)-dependent blue light signaling and the subsequent attenuation of ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5 (HY5) movement to hypocotyls are key inducers of xylem fiber differentiation in Using grafted chimeric plants and hypocotyl-specific transcriptome sequencing of light signaling mutants under controlled light conditions, we demonstrate that the perception of blue light by CRYs in shoots drives secondary cell wall (SCW) deposition at xylem fiber cells during the secondary growth of hypocotyls.

Natural and technological networks exhibit dynamics that can lead to complex cooperative behaviors, such as synchronization in coupled oscillators and rhythmic activity in neuronal networks. Understanding these collective dynamics is crucial for deciphering a range of phenomena from brain activity to power grid stability. Recent interest in co-evolutionary networks has highlighted the intricate interplay between dynamics on and of the network with mixed time scales.

Detailed mappings of the laser dynamics reveal that, due to optical feedback (OF), the locking boundaries resulting from optical injection (OI) shift towards larger negative detunings and higher injection rates and display a periodic pattern of the injection locking boundaries. We demonstrate how feedback induces a cascade of quasiperiodic bifurcations associated with abrupt dynamic changes, hence altering the route to locking.

The nonlinear dynamical behavior in a complex isothermal reaction network involving heterogeneous catalysis is studied. The method first determines the multiple steady states in the reaction network. This is followed by an analysis of bifurcation continuations to identify several kinds of bifurcations, including limit point, Bogdanov-Takens, generalized Hopf, period doubling, and generalized period doubling.
