Is Pasture Cropping a Valid Weed Management Tool.

Published: January 2020

The aim of the present work was to study the feasibility of pasture cropping under the Mediterranean conditions prevailing in central Spain and its potential as a weed management tool. Three cropping systems were assessed: conventionally grown winter barley and winter barley in pasture cropping with two perennial summer species, and . The results showed that the growth of these two species in a pasture cropping system was limited by the severe drought conditions and high temperatures present during the summer in some of the study years. Although there were no differences in the establishment of winter barley in any of the treatments assessed, pasture cropping reduced winter barley yields up to 50%-60% in years with low rainfall in spring. Regarding weed control, pasture cropping showed a significant suppression of the total weed density and number of weed species. As a conclusion, pasture cropping can be considered as a valid weed management tool. However, the economic feasibility of this system under the climatic conditions of central Spain (characterized by a high risk of severe summer droughts) is still not clear. The availability of supplemental irrigation may reduce competition between pastures and winter crops and ensure a profitable production of summer pastures.

The species-area relationship (SAR) is one of the oldest in ecology, linking the increase in species richness in sampling area. Later, new parameters were incorporated into its equation, such as taxon-specific responses, habitats use by species and species adapted to human-modified habitats, originating the Countryside SAR, a version intended to integrate the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology, which is still inefficiencies when used to evaluate food production systems. Therefore, we present the first attempt to incorporate into Countryside SAR the minimum land demand parameter for food production, the food environmental footprint - EFP, and improve the use of the method within the agricultural sciences scope.

An urgent problem in the agricultural science of livestock production is the adequate feeding of the queens of farm animals, in particular sheep kept on year-round pasture, especially in the second half of pregnancy and the first half of lactation. These periods are the most stressful, since the uterus does not receive enough necessary nutrients for the normal functioning of the body, embryonic and post-embryonic development of the offspring. In this regard, the purpose of our research was to increase the usefulness of the diet queens by carrying out additional feeding crushed barley with the inclusion of a mineral supplement developed taking into account the chemical composition of feed in Kazakhstan.

Due to consumer demand, many conventional poultry farms are now growing poultry without antibiotics or synthetic chemicals. In addition to this, pasture/organic poultry farms have increased significantly in the USA, and they are also antibiotic- and chemical-free. According to recent reports, both antibiotic-free conventional and pasture poultry farmers are facing the re-emergence of bacterial diseases.

Enteric Methane Emission from Cattle Grazing Systems with Cover Crops and Legume-Grass Pasture.

Animals (Basel)

December 2024

Unidad de Investigación y Desarrollo de las Ingenierías, Facultad Regional Buenos Aires, Universidad Tecnológica Nacional, Ciudad Autónoma Buenos Aires C1179AAQ, Argentina.

This study aims to quantify enteric methane (CH) emission and dry matter intake (DMI) in beef steers under two rotational grazing systems: (i) a mixture of cover crops (vetch + ryegrass + forage radish) (CC) and (ii) alfalfa and fescue pasture (AFP). Eighteen Hereford steers were divided into two groups (nine steers per group), assigned to either the CC or AFP. Methane emissions were measured using the SF tracer technique.

From data to insights: Upscaling riverine GHG fluxes in Germany with machine learning.

Sci Total Environ

Global fluvial ecosystems are important sources of greenhouse gases (CO, CH and NO) to the atmosphere, but their estimates are plagued by uncertainties due to unaccounted spatio-temporal variabilities in the fluxes. In this study, we tested the potential of modeling these variabilities using several machine learning models (ML) and three different input datasets (remotely sensed vegetation indices, in-situ water quality, and a combination of both) from 20 headwater catchments in Germany that differ in catchment land use and stream size. We also upscaled fluvial GHG fluxes for Germany using the best ML model and explored the role of catchment land use on the GHG spatial-temporal trends.
