Composite membranes were prepared by co-casting, incorporating two nonionic surfactants in a poly(ether--amide), Pebax 1657 up to 50 wt %. These polysorbate nonionic surfactants contain many ethylene oxide units and are very CO-philic agents; thereby, they can be exploited as membrane additives for gas separation involving carbon oxide. Dynamic light scattering analysis proved a higher stability of additionated Pebax 1657 solutions with respect to those containing only the copolymer. Scanning electron microscopy showed a regular membrane morphology without pores or defects for all investigated samples. If on the one hand the addition of the additive has depressed the mechanical properties, on the other, it has positively influenced the gas transport properties of Pebax 1657 films. CO permeability increased up to two or three times after the incorporation of 50 wt % additive in copolymer matrix, while the selectivity was not significantly affected. The effect of temperature on permanent gas transport properties was studied in the range of 15-55 °C.

Novel blend membranes containing S-PVA and PEBAX 1657 with a blend ratio of 8:2 (referred to as SPP) were prepared using a solution-casting technique. In the manufacturing process, sulfonated montmorillonite (S-MMT) in ratios of 0%, 3%, 5%, and 7% was used as a filler. The crystallinity of composite membranes has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), while the interaction between the components was evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR).

A tough ion gel membrane containing a CO-philic ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide ([Emim][C(CN)]), was developed, and its CO permeation properties were evaluated under humid conditions at elevated temperatures. Pebax 1657, which is a diblock copolymer composed of a polyamide block and a polyethylene oxide block, was used as the gel network of the ion gel membrane to prepare a tough ion gel with good ionic liquid-holding properties. The polyamide block formed a semicrystalline structure in [Emim][C(CN)] to toughen the ion gel membrane an energy dissipation mechanism.

Ultrasmall 4 to 6 nm nanoparticles of the metal-organic framework (MOF) UiO-66 (University of Oslo-66) were successfully prepared and embedded into the polymer Pebax 1657 to fabricate thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes for CO/N and CO/CH separations. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that ligand functionalization with amino (-NH) and nitro (-NO) groups significantly enhances the gas separation performance of the membranes. For CO/N separation, 7.

Graphene-Oxide-Modified Metal-Organic Frameworks Embedded in Mixed-Matrix Membranes for Highly Efficient CO/N Separation.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

MOF-74 (metal-organic framework) is utilized as a filler in mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) to improve gas selectivity due to its unique one-dimensional hexagonal channels and high-density open metal sites (OMSs), which exhibit a strong affinity for CO molecules. Reducing the agglomeration of nanoparticles and improving the compatibility with the matrix can effectively avoid the existence of non-selective voids to improve the gas separation efficiency. We propose a novel, layer-by-layer modification strategy for MOF-74 with graphene oxide.
