The University of California White Mountain Research Center is located on Mount Barcroft, a 13,040-ft (3975-m) peak on the California White Mountain range. This report describes how the peak got its name honoring Sir Joseph Barcroft of Great Britain. Several publicly available webpages were the sources for this study. On October 16, 1951, the United States Board on Geographic Names approved "Mount Barcroft" as the name for a peak on the California White Mountain range enabling the building of a facility dedicated to high-altitude research. The process of naming, however, was far from smooth. Objections came from the members of the Sierra Club, editors of a local newspaper, and a few citizens of California delaying the approval process. At least six other names had been proposed, three of which were from a Native American Indian language. Those who opposed the name "Mount Barcroft" argued that Barcroft never visited the United States, let alone the White Mountain region, and there was a paucity of Native American Indian names for geographic features in the United States. Despite oppositions and controversies, however, a much-deserved scientist was duly honored by an agency of the United States federal government.

Mammarenaviruses (genus Mammarenavirus, family Arenaviridae) are rodent-borne zoonotic viruses consisting of 52 viral species, including ten that are pathogenic to humans. Currently, only two endemic mammarenavirus species are known in Europe: the human pathogenic Mammarenavirus choriomeningitidis (LCMV) and the recently discovered hedgehog-origin Mammarenavirus mecsekense (MEMV). In this study, 59 faecal specimens from Northern white-breasted hedgehogs (Erinaceus roumanicus) from different geographic regions in Hungary were investigated for mammarenavirus presence and complete genome characterization using newly designed screening primers by RT-semi-nested PCR and sequencing methods.

To diversify wine production in Xinjiang and address the issue of wine homogenization, it is crucial to leverage the unique climatic advantages of each grape-producing area to foster a high-quality wine industry. Using meteorological data from 80 national standard meteorological stations in Xinjiang, spanning 1961 to 2019, this study established a climatic zoning index system tailored to distinct grape varieties for wines, including dry red, dry white, ice wine, sparkling wine, and natural sweet wines. The system is formulated based on key climatic factors such as the frost-free period, ≥ 10 °C active accumulated temperature (AAT10), mean temperature of the coldest month, annual extreme minimum temperature, and dryness.

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Animal Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction in the Plateau Mountainous Region, Ministry of Education, Guizhou Province/Guiyang City/Huaxi District, China.

Objective: This study aimed to identify polymorphisms in the gene encoding the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA synthase 1, HMGCS1, and analyze their association with slaughter characteristics, meat quality, and organ coefficients in Guizhou white goats.

Methods: A total of 153 twelve-month-old Guizhou white goats (78 male and 75 female) were included in the study. Slaughter characteristics, meat quality, and organ coefficients were assessed.

Background: Women veterans represent a growing number of veterans with limb loss who receive Veterans Health Administration treatment. This study surveyed a large sample of veterans about their satisfaction with prosthetic-related care and sought to understand how women veterans with limb loss rate their satisfaction with prostheses and care.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, mixed-mode survey of 46,614 veterans with major upper or lower limb amputation or partial foot amputation to assess amputation type, prosthesis use intensity, satisfaction with prostheses and services, and quality of life.

In the ecosystem, wood-inhabiting fungi play an indispensable role in wood degradation and the cycle of substances. They are regarded as the "key player" in the process of wood decomposition because of their ability to produce various enzymes that break down woody lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose. In this study, four new wood-inhabiting fungal species, , , , and , were collected from southwestern China and were proposed based on the morphological and molecular evidence.
