FTL: a novel predictor in gastric cancer.

Int J Clin Exp Pathol

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, The First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University Hefei 230022, Anhui, China.

Published: July 2017

Background: Ferritin light chain (FTL) is a functionally distinct composition of ferritin, which is over-expressed and play an important role in multiple human malignancies.

Methods: Matched normal and cancerous tissues in 60 gastric cancer (GC) patients were detected for FTL expression using immunohistochemistry staining. The relationship betweent FTL expression and clinicopathological features was analyzed by chi-square test, and the Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression analyses were used to calculate the overall survival (OS) characteristics and recurrence-free survival (RFS).

Results: FTL protein was significantly higher in GC tissues than adjacent tissues. Further, FTL expression was not correlative with gender, age, tumor size, tumor location, CEA and AFP level (>0.05). However, the associations between FTL expression and depth of tumor invasion (P=0.014), differentiation grade (P=0.001), lymph node metastasis (<0.001) and TNM stage (<0.001) were significant. Additionally, patients of GC with low FTL expression had longer OS (=0.019) and RFS (=0.011), and FTL was an independent prognostic factor for both RFS and OS.

Conclusions: FTL was an independent risk factor for both RFS and OS, indicating that FTL could be considered as a prognostic factor for GC patients.

Background: Gastrodin, an important component of traditional Chinese medicine, is gaining interest because of its anti-tumor effects. Ferroptosis is a new mode of cell death, which has emerged as a promising target for colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment. This research investigates the action mechanism of gastrodin on the process of CRC by inducing ferroptosis.

Background: The pathogenesis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is still unknown, so finding the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis is crucial in PCOS.

Methods: The GSE34526 dataset from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was used to screen biomarkers in this study. KEGG enrichment analysis of GSE34526 was performed using Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA).

Oxidative Stress (OS) is the main cause of damage to the Blood-Testis Barrier (BTB) in cryptorchidism, which seriously endangers male reproductive health. It is well known that the OS induced ferroptosis is an important cause of dysfunction in the body. However, it is still unknown whether BTB damage in cryptorchidism leads to ferroptosis of Sertoli cells.

Background: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) is a severe complication of diabetes. Recent evidence suggests that ferroptosis, a form of regulated necrosis, may play a significant role in the progression of DFU. However, the precise molecular mechanisms remain elusive.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) play a crucial role in the progression of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Here, integrated single-cell RNA sequencing analysis is utilized to comprehensively map CAFs in the human PDAC tumor microenvironment (TME). Normal fibroblasts (NFs) and nine distinct CAF subtypes are identified including newly identified CAF subtypes, CDCP1FTL CAFs, transitional CAFs (tCAFs), interferon simulated genes (ISG) myofibroblastic CAFs (myCAFs), and proliferative CAFs (pCAFs).
