Childhood cancer survivors are a growing population with high morbidity and many healthcare needs. As time from treatment lengthens, these patients are more and more likely to be followed in community primary care. Yet, studies suggest that primary care providers are unprepared (although not unwilling) to care for childhood cancer survivors. The 1-year fellowship in childhood cancer survivorship presented herein represents an educational intervention designed to prepare clinical leaders in survivorship. Ultimately, this effort may help address current gaps in care for childhood cancer survivors.
Background: Neuroblastoma is the most prevalent extracranial solid tumor in pediatric populations worldwide, representing 8-10% of childhood malignancies and contributing to approximately 15% of pediatric cancer-related fatalities. This study aims to report global trends in the incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of childhood neuroblastoma from 1990 to 2021.
Methods: The study utilized data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database to analyze neuroblastoma incidence, mortality, and DALYs in children aged 0-14 years.
Patients with osteosarcoma (OS), a debilitating pediatric bone malignancy, have limited treatment options to combat aggressive disease. OS thrives on insulin growth factor (IGF)-mediated signaling that can facilitate cell proliferation. Previous efforts to target IGF-1R signaling were mostly unsuccessful, likely due to compensatory signaling through alternative splicing of the insulin receptor () to the proliferative isoform.
Objectives: to review scientific evidence on the impacts of pesticides on child health, addressing prenatal and postnatal exposures, acute and chronic effects.
Data Source: narrative literature review, using databases such as PubMed, SciELO and Google Scholar. The inclusion criteria involved studies published between 2000 and 2023 that analyzed the relationship between pesticides and child health, including systematic reviews, cohort studies, case-control studies and clinical trials.
Cell signaling pathways are enriched for biological processes crucial for cellular communication, response to external stimuli, and metabolism. Here, a cell signaling-focused CRISPR screen identified cytochrome c oxidase subunit 4 isoform 1 (COX4I1) as a novel vulnerability in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Depletion of COX4I1 hindered leukemia cell proliferation and impacted in vivo AML progression.
Background: The caries severity in childhood may predict caries conditions in the future and even in adulthood in caries risk models. Nevertheless, the rate of recurrent caries after treatment of severe early childhood caries is high and correlated with behavioural factors, rather than clinical indicators. Compliance with the caries control programme has been demonstrated to prevent root caries development in head and neck cancer patients, suggesting that compliance with treatment protocols is a more important key to bringing about successful outcomes than treatment protocols themselves.
