In this paper we report on the first toroidally focused 2D real-time laser-ultrasonic imaging system and a modified filtered back projection algorithm that can be used in the region near the waist of the astigmatic laser-ultrasonic probe beam. The system is capable of visualizing an acupuncture needle 0.2 mm in diameter located at ∼4 cm depth in water. The lateral spatial resolution is better than ∼0.32 mm and axial spatial resolution is ∼30 μm. The achieved frame rate is up to 30 Hz. The depth dependency of the sensitivity region width and lateral resolution are experimentally measured and discussed. The array is intended to be used as a part of combined real-time photoacoustic and laser-ultrasonic imaging system.

The thickness loss caused by corrosion is a vital factor that threatens the health of shell structures. It is significant to perform a non-destructive quantitative evaluation of corrosion-thinning defects in plate structures. Based on the laser ultrasonic guided wavefield scanning technology, this paper proposes an instantaneous wavenumber multi-shot fusion method, which improves the performance of the instantaneous wavenumber imaging method.

Laser ultrasonic imaging is a promising technique for structural health monitoring because it is noncontact and nondestructive. However, this technique will only find more industrial applications if it has a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and short data acquisition time. In existing delay-and-sum algorithms, such as the synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT) and the total focusing method, a higher SNR requires more A-scan signals, which mean a longer data acquisition time.

Metallurgical defects in metal laser additive manufacturing (LAM) are inevitable due to complex non-equilibrium thermodynamics. A laser ultrasonic system was designed for detecting surface/near-surface defects in the layer-by-layer LAM process. An approach was proposed for ultrasonic imaging of defects based on variable time window intensity mapping with adaptive 2σ threshold denoising.

Far-field laser technology has greatly promoted the progress of nondestructive ultrasonic imaging of bulk structures. However, under thermoelastic excitation, the body waves exhibit a relatively low signal-to-noise ratio, resulting in images with low resolution and contrast. Based on the motivation, this paper developed a frequency-domain phase weighted imaging method to improve the quality of laser ultrasonic defect imaging.

Cylindrical components are parts with curved surfaces, and their high-precision defect testing is of great significance to industrial production. This paper proposes a noncontact internal defect imaging method for cylindrical components, and an automatic photoacoustic testing platform is built. A synthetic aperture focusing technology in the polar coordinate system based on laser ultrasonic (LU-pSAFT) is established, and the relationship between the imaging quality and position of discrete points is analyzed.
