Chromium is commonly found in the flue gases and ashes of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration. It has been reported as an active catalyst for the formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) during de novo tests, yet its specific mode of action has remained unclear. This study aims to identify the effects of chromium chloride on the formation of PCDD/F and other chloro-aromatics and to elucidate the underlying reaction mechanisms. A series of de novo tests, conducted over a wide range of temperature (from 250 to 550 °C) and for four different oxygen contents (0, 5, 10, 20 %), confirmed the promoting effect of CrCl on the PCDD/F formation. In situ X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) spectroscopy was applied to investigate the behavior of CrCl during heating, describing the entire picture of CrCl-promoted formation pathways of dioxins. The effect of oxygen was studied by measuring XAFS spectra on samples heated at different oxygen concentrations. According to these spectra, chromium compounds play two key roles during dioxins formation: (a) chlorinating carbon, using chlorine derived from conversion of CrCl into CrO, and further oxidation to Cr(VI), and (b) facilitating oxidative destruction of the carbon matrix, while reducing Cr(VI) to CrO.

HF-free low-temperature synthesis of MXene for electrochemical hydrogen production.

Nanotechnology

January 2025

MXenes [two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides] are gaining significant interest as alternative electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction due to their excellent properties such as high electrical conductivity, large surface area and chemical stability. MXenes are traditionally synthesized using hydrofluoric acid (HF), which raises safety and environmental concerns due to its highly corrosive and toxic nature. HF introduces fluoride functional groups on the surface of MXenes, and these have been reported to have a detrimental effect on electrocatalysis.

Diabetes is a global public health concern with increasing prevalence worldwide. Chromium (Cr), a trace element found in soil, water, and food, has been proposed to have a possible positive effect in glucose metabolism and diabetes mellitus prevention. However, the relationship between trivalent chromium [Cr(III)] exposure, mainly through the consumption of diet supplements, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains controversial.

Chiral Templating in a Hybrid Chromium Chloride Hydrate.

Inorg Chem

July 2024

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, The Ohio State University, 100 W. 18th Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43210, United States.

The synthesis and characterization of three new hybrid metal halide hydrates in which -[CrCl(HO)] cocrystallizes alongside α-methylbenzylammonium chloride are described. The enantiomorphic crystals, (()-(+)-α-methylbenzylammonium)(-[CrCl(HO)])Cl (()-) and (()-(-)-α-methylbenzylammonium)(-[CrCl(HO)])Cl (()-), have 222 space group symmetry and show mirrored circular dichroism signals. The racemate, (-α-methylbenzylammonium)(-[CrCl(HO)])Cl (()-), adopts a polar structure with space group symmetry in which enantiomers are related by mirror planes within organic bilayers.

Background: Long-term exposure to cadmium can induce renal toxicity in rats, leading to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and iron death. Notably, in cadmium-exposed rats, there is an increased expression of UNC93B1 (unc-93 homolog B1). Consequently, our investigation aims to determine the impact of UNC93B1 on ER stress and iron death in cadmium-exposed rats by modulating the cGAS-STING (cyclic GMP-AMP synthase-stimulator of interferon genes) pathway.

Light-Regulated Nucleation for Growing Highly Uniform Single-Crystalline Microrods.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

May 2024

We report a light-irradiation method to control the synchronous nucleation of a donor-acceptor (D-A) fluorophore for growing highly uniform single-crystalline microrods, which is in sharp contrast to the prevailing methods of restricting spontaneous nucleation and additionally adding seeds. The D-A fluorophore was observed to undergo photoinduced electron transfer to CrCl, leading to the generation of HCl and the subsequent protonation of the D-A fluorophore. By intensifying photoirradiation or prolonging its duration, the concentration of protonated D-A fluorophores can be rapidly increased to a high supersaturation level.
