Published: March 2019

Invited for this month's cover is the group of Prof. Dr. Hisashi Shimakoshi at Kyushu University, Japan. The front cover shows "le mariage" of an iridium complex and a vitamin B derivative with two wedding rings in the background. This collaboration of two complexes is induced by visible light in the presence of air to achieve green molecular transformations. This protocol was applied to the synthesis of amides from a wide range of trichlorinated organic compounds. Read the full text of the article at 10.1002/cplu.201800522.

This study explores a sustainable method for synthesizing quinazoline derivatives through visible light-driven photocatalysis using curcumin-sensitized titanium dioxide (TiO) nanoparticles. A one-pot, three-component reaction involving aldehydes, urea/thiourea, and dimedone was utilized to efficiently produce quinazoline compounds. The photocatalytic performance of curcumin-sensitized TiO (Cur-TiO) was compared to pure TiO (P-TiO), with Cur-TiO showing significantly enhanced activity.

Olefin-linked covalent organic frameworks (OL-COFs) show great promise for visible-light-driven photocatalysis. Manipulating atomic-level donor-acceptor interactions in OL-COFs is key to understanding their exciton effects in this system. Here, three OL-COFs are presented with orthorhombic lattice structures, synthesized via Knoevenagel polycondensation reaction of terephthalaldehyde and tetratopic monomers featuring phenyl, benzo[c][1,2,5]oxadiazole, and benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole moieties.

A novel protocol for the visible-light-driven synthesis of β-trifluoromethylated enamines has been developed, which operates without the use of transition metals or any photocatalysts, utilizing trifluoromethylthiosulfonium salts as the source of trifluoromethyl groups under mild conditions. According to this new protocol, more than 40 products have been prepared in moderate to good yields. In addition to eliminating the need for expensive or toxic transition metals and photocatalysts, this new methodology proves its potential scalability through air-stability, the use of safe and readily available reagents, a two-step one-pot procedure, and effective gram-scale reactions.

One-pot, multicomponent reactions are known for their green and efficient nature. We report a novel three-component reaction of alkyl amines, alkyl glyoxylates, and unactivated alkyl bromides under visible-light-induced palladium catalysis, yielding -alkyl unnatural α-amino acid derivatives. This method offers mild conditions, broad substrate scope, and excellent functional group tolerance without requiring stoichiometric organometallic reagents.

A novel visible-light-driven photoredox-catalyzed cascade bicyclization of 1,7-enynes with aqueous sulfoxonium ylides is reported. The reaction is highly chemoselective with three new C-C bonds, two new rings, and an all-carbon quaternary stereocenter constructed in a one-pot fashion. This mild protocol features a remarkably broad substrate scope with good functional group tolerance, providing a general and practical approach to access various cyclopenta[]quinolines.
