An acid pretreatment strategy is developed to enhance the proton transport of polysulfone-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PSF-PVP) membranes for application in vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB). The acid pretreatment leads to the formation of ionic conducting clusters with a size of around d=15.41 nm in the membrane (p-PSF-PVP). As a result, the proton conductivity and proton/vanadium ion selectivity of the p-PSF-PVP membrane increases to 6.60×10  S cm and 10.63×10  S min cm , respectively, values significantly higher than 2.30×10  S cm and 6.67×10  S min cm of the pristine PSF-PVP membrane. Moreover, a VRFB assembled with the p-PSF-PVP membrane exhibits a high coulombic efficiency of 98.6 % and an outstanding energy efficiency of 88.5 %. The results indicate that treatment with either sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid leads to an improvement of membrane properties, and the acid pretreatment is a promising strategy to significantly enhance the performance of the PSF-PVP membrane for VRFB application.

Different molar ratio of choline chloride (ChCl) and p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH) (2: 1, 1: 1 and 1: 2, mol: mol) were used to prepare deep eutectic solvents (ChCl: p-TsOH) for pretreating cellulose fibers to elevate cellulose accessibility, enhance xylan elimination, increase lignin removal and promote enzymatic digestion. ChCl: p-TsOH (1: 1, mol: mol) could effectually destroy the dense layout of wheat straw (WS) at 80 °C for 60 min. Cellulose crystallinity declined from 43.

Environmental pollution from packaging, has led to a need for sustainable alternatives. This study investigates the biodegradation of polylactic acid (PLA) by Amycolatopsis orientalis and Amycolatopsis thailandensis after thermal and thermal-alkaline pretreatments. The biodegradation was assessed based on weight loss, CO evolution, carbon balance analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Alterations in the kynurenine pathway, and in particular the balance of neuroprotective and neurotoxic metabolites, have been implicated in the pathophysiology of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and antidepressant treatment response. In this study, we examined the relationship between changes in kynurenine pathway activity (Kynurenine/Tryptophan ratio), focusing on the balance of neuroprotective-to neurotoxic metabolites (Kynurenic Acid/Quinolinic Acid and Kynurenic Acid/3-Hydroxykynurenine ratios), and response to 8 weeks of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) treatment, including early changes four weeks after SSRI initiation. Additionally, we examined relationships between kynurenine metabolite ratios and three promising biomarkers of depression and antidepressant response: amygdala/hippocampal volume, and glutamate metabolites in the anterior cingulate cortex.

Predicting the onset of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) in patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) remains challenging. ICI-induced T1D (ICI-T1D) is a rare but serious complication that leads to complete insulin depletion. While diabetes-associated autoantibodies, such as glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies (GADA), are typically absent in non-ICI-related fulminant T1D, they are relatively common in ICI-T1D.

Copper-Induced Transgenerational Plasticity in Plant Defence Boosts Aphid Fitness.

Transgenerational plasticity in plants is an increasingly recognized phenomenon, yet it is mostly unclear whether transgenerational plasticity is relevant to both the fitness of the plant and its interacting species. Using monoclonal strains of the giant duckweed (Spirodela polyrhiza) and its native herbivore, the waterlily aphid (Rhopalosiphum nymphaeae), we assessed whether pre-treating plants with copper excess, both indoors and outdoors, induces transgenerational plasticity in plant defences that alter plant and herbivore fitness. Outdoors, copper pre-treatment tended to increase plant growth rates under recurring copper excess.
