Metabolic reprogramming universally occurs in cancer. Mitochondria act as the hubs of bioenergetics and metabolism. The morphodynamics of mitochondria, comprised of fusion and fission processes, are closely associated with mitochondrial functions and are often dysregulated in cancer. In this study, we aim to investigate the mitochondrial morphodynamics and its functional consequences in human liver cancer. We observed excessive activation of mitochondrial fusion in tumor tissues from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients and in vitro cultured tumor organoids from cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). The knockdown of the fusion regulator genes, OPA1 (Optic atrophy 1) or MFN1 (Mitofusin 1), inhibited the fusion process in HCC cell lines and CCA tumor organoids. This resulted in inhibition of cell growth in vitro and tumor formation in vivo, after tumor cell engraftment in mice. This inhibitory effect is associated with the induction of cell apoptosis, but not related to cell cycle arrest. Genome-wide transcriptomic profiling revealed that the inhibition of fusion predominately affected cellular metabolic pathways. This was further confirmed by the blocking of mitochondrial fusion which attenuated oxygen consumption and cellular ATP production of tumor cells. In conclusion, increased mitochondrial fusion in liver cancer alters metabolism and fuels tumor cell growth.

Large-bodied pelagic sharks are key regulators of oceanic ecosystem stability, but highly impacted by severe overfishing. One such species, the shortfin mako shark (), a globally widespread, highly migratory predator, has undergone dramatic population reductions and is now Endangered (IUCN Red List), with Atlantic Ocean mako sharks in particular assessed by fishery managers as overfished and in need of urgent, improved management attention. Genomic-scale population assessments for this apex predator species have not been previously available to inform management planning; thus, we investigated the population genetics of mako sharks across the Atlantic using a bi-organelle genomics approach.

Mitochondria, the cellular powerhouses, are pivotal to neuronal function and health, particularly through their role in regulating synaptic structure and function. Spine reprogramming, which underlies synapse development, depends heavily on mitochondrial dynamics-such as biogenesis, fission, fusion, and mitophagy as well as functions including ATP production, calcium (Ca) regulation, and retrograde signaling. Mitochondria supply the energy necessary for assisting synapse development and plasticity, while also regulating intracellular Ca homeostasis to prevent excitotoxicity and support synaptic neurotransmission.

Observing quantum mechanical characteristics in biological processes is a surprising and important discovery. One example, which is gaining more experimental evidence and practical applications, is the effect of weak magnetic fields with extremely low frequencies on cells, especially cancerous ones. In this study, we use a mathematical model of ROS dynamics in cancer cells to show how ROS oscillatory patterns can act as a resonator to amplify the small effects of the magnetic fields on the radical pair dynamics in mitochondrial Complex III.
