Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a simple optical technique used to detect blood volume changes in the micro-vascular bed of tissue in order to track the heartbeat. Smart-phone PPG, performed with the phones camera, has became popular in recent years due to a boom in digital health apps that help people monitor their health parameters. However, many apps struggle with getting readings that are accurate enough to estimate heart rate variability (HRV) one of the most popular biomarkers in the preventive health space. The main obstacle is the multitude of factors that impact PPG results: unique technical characteristics of different smartphone models, frames per second (FPS) rate and the way color is recoarded, brightness and ambient flash levels, finger placement, in-measurement movement, etc. These factors may decrease the accuracy of the signal extracted from the camera's video stream and produce additional errors in the computation of HRV parameters. Thus, there is a need to estimate signal quality and predict possible bias in HRV parameter calculation. In this paper, we describe the method for processing signal from smartphone cameras, estimating signal quality, recognizing RR intervals, and predicting bias of simple HRV parameters.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the acute effects of beetroot extract and resveratrol supplementation (isolated and combined) on cardiac autonomic modulation and cardiovascular parameters recovery after exercise in individuals with coronary artery disease (CAD).
Methods: 14 males with CAD were submitted to 4 protocols consisting of 30 min (min) of rest, 30 min of aerobic exercise on a treadmill (60% of the heart rate reserve HRR), followed by 30 min of recovery. Before each protocol, the subjects consumed 500 mg of starch (placebo protocol), 500 mg of beetroot (beetroot protocol), or 500 mg of resveratrol (resveratrol protocol), or 500 mg of beetroot and 500 mg of resveratrol (combined protocol).

Developing a wearable device that can continuously and reliably detect and evaluate heart rate variability (HRV) parameters is critical for the diabetic population with cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN). In this work, we proposed a zwitterionic conducting hydrogel that enabled a reliable and comfortable wearable device for the evaluation and detection of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The hydrogel can achieve a strain of 2003 %, an electrical conductivity of 190 mS/m, and is capable of adhering to a variety of materials, including wood, plastic, and glass.

The EDUCATE study investigated the acute impact of energy drink (ED) consumption on heart rate variability (HRV) in children and adolescents, with a focus on how these stimulant-rich beverages influence cardiac autonomic function. Given the popularity of EDs among young people, this study assessed the immediate cardiovascular response to ED intake. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial involved 26 healthy participants aged 10-18 years.

Objective: To investigate the effects of dapagliflozin, in addition to standard therapy, on heart rate variability (HRV), soluble growth stimulation expressed gene 2 protein (sST2), N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and echocardiographic parameters in patients with early-onset post-myocardial infarction heart failure (HF).
Methods: A total of 98 patients with early-onset post-myocardial infarction HF were enrolled and randomly divided into a control group ( = 48, receiving standard therapy) and an observation group ( = 50, receiving standard therapy plus dapagliflozin 10 mg daily). HRV, cardiac function, and echocardiographic parameters were measured at baseline and after 24 weeks of treatment.

Background And Aims: Wearable devices capture physiological signals non-invasively and passively. Many of these parameters have been linked to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) activity. We evaluated the associative ability of several physiological metrics with IBD flares and how they change before the development of flare.
