Saponaria officinalis L. is a perennial plant from the Caryophyllaceae family whose various parts are used in traditional medicine as the treatment agent of skin diseases, blood purifier, diuretic, sudorific, and bile purifier. The cultivation system of hairy roots is a proper alternative for improving the valuable pharmaceutical compounds production compared to other in-vitro methods.

Oxybenzone (OBZ), known as Benzophenone-3, is a commonly used UV filter in sun tans and skin protectants, entering aquatic systems either directly during recreational activities or indirectly through wastewater treatment plants discharge. To study the potential degradation capacity of plants for OBZ in phytotreatment, a well-established hairy root culture (Armoracia rusticana) was treated with OBZ. More than 20% of spiked OBZ (100μM) was eliminated from the medium by hairy roots after 3h of exposure.

The application of fiber-coupled Raman probes for the discrimination of cancerous and normal skin has the advantage of a non-invasive in vivo application, easy clinical handling, and access to the majority of body sites, which would otherwise be limited by stationary Raman microscopes. Nevertheless, including optical fibers and miniaturizing optical components, as well as measuring in vivo, involves the sensibility to external perturbation factors that could introduce artifacts to the acquired Raman spectra and thereby potentially reduce classification performance. In this study, typical perturbation factors of Raman measurements with a Raman fiber probe, optimized for clinical in vivo discrimination of skin cancer, were investigated experimentally.

Surface topography and chemistry have significant influences on the biological performance of biomedical implants. Our aim is to produce an implant surface with favorable biological properties by dual modification of surface chemistry and topography in one single simple process. In this study, because of its chemical stability, excellent corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility, titanium oxide (TiO2) was chosen to coat the biomedical Ti alloy implants.

Purpose: Tissue response after implantation determines the success of the healing process. This response is not only dependent on the chemical properties of the implant surface but also by the surface topography or its roughness. Although in vitro and in vivo studies show improved results with rough- and fluoride-modified implants, the mechanisms behind these findings are still unknown.
