We introduce a novel algorithm that turns a flash selfie taken with a smartphone into a studio-like photograph with uniform lighting. Our method uses a convolutional neural network trained on a set of pairs of photographs acquired in a controlled environment. For each pair, we have one photograph of a subject's face taken with the camera flash enabled and another one of the same subject in the same pose illuminated using a photographic studio-lighting setup. We show how our method can amend lighting artifacts introduced by a close-up camera flash, such as specular highlights, shadows, and skin shine.

Background: Pre-clinical studies demonstrate that delivering a high dose at a high dose rate result in less toxicity while maintaining tumor control, known as the FLASH effect. In proton therapy, clinical trials have started using 250 MeV transmission beams and more trials are foreseen. A novel aspect of FLASH treatments, compared to conventional radiotherapy, is the importance of dose rate next to dose and geometry.

However, the role of monitoring in conservation is frequently diminished due to: 1) surveys being implemented in isolation, 2) limited on-ground-capacity leading to infrequent monitoring, and 3) inappropriate methods being applied.
