Multiple-stimuli-responsive photoluminescence films based on a Zn -organic framework, {[Zn (Htpim)(3,4-pydc) ]⋅4 DMF⋅4 H O} (1, Htpim=2,4,5-tri(4-pyridyl)imidazole, 3,4-H pydc=3,4-pyridinedicarboxylic acid), were fabricated. This compound consisted of a 2D corrugated layer, {Zn(3,4-pydc)} , which was further pillared using a Y-shaped pillar N-donor ligand (Htpim) to form a 3D-pillared-layer framework with 1D open channels. The rectangular channels in the as-synthesized compound are fully occupied by guest DMF and H O molecules. The framework exhibits instant and reversible thermochromic properties corresponding to the removal of different H O and DMF guest molecules as temperature increases. The pale-yellow crystal undergoes significant redshifting to a greenish emission centered at 530 nm. Compound 1 also showed remarkable solvatochromic effects in the presence of various organic solvents without affecting its structural integrity. In addition, polycrystalline MOF films were grown on an α-Al O support for switchable and fast-response thermochromic and solvatochromic sensors.

An overcrowded ethylene composed of electron-donating anion, naphthoxide, and electron-accepting cation, acridinium, has been synthesized. It is in equilibrium between a folded conformer having a smaller permanent dipole moment with visible light absorption and a twisted conformer having a larger permanent dipole moment with NIR light absorption. The overcrowded ethylene shows multiple NIR chromisms, such as solvatochromism, thermochromism, mechanochromism, vapochromism, halochromism, and amphoteric electrochromisms, which are caused by the conformational change between folded and twisted conformers or by controlling the energy difference between the HOMO of the donor moiety and the LUMO of the acceptor moiety.

Physical understanding and determination of different analytes without the need for advanced and additional equipment are highly important, which can be achieved by using stimuli-induced chromic materials. Physical and chemical incorporation of responsive chromophores into different polymers results in the fabrication of chromic polymers. Chromic electrospun nanofibers are prepared using the electrospinning technique, and their stimuli-responsivity is improved due to their high surface-to-volume ratio.

Incorporation of BN units into π-conjugated organic compounds, as substitutes for specific CC couples, often leads to new hybrid materials with modified physical and chemical properties. Poly(p-phenylene iminoborane)s are derived from well-known poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) by replacement of the vinylene groups by B=N linking units. Herein, an unprecedented poly(p-phenylene iminoborane) is presented that features a strictly alternating sequence of BN units along the main chain.

The construction of functional materials via the co-assembly of multimolecular systems has recently emerged as a fascinating topic. The co-assembled multicomponent could promote the evolution of supramolecular assemblies into a high-order nanoarchitecture with improved functional properties. We report the successful preparation of a dual-functional polydiacetylene () having thermochromic and solvatochromic properties via facile co-assembly of and cyanuric acid () followed by ultraviolet-induced polymerization.

Rotational dynamics of 3-(3H-2l4-benzo[c]isothiazol-2-yl)-7-(diethylamino)-2H-chromen-2-one (3B7D2HC-2-one) is studied using steady-state fluorescence depolarization and time-resolved fluorescence techniques in non-polar, polar and polar aprotic solvents by varying temperatures. Computational calculations are performed using Gaussian 09 software. Over the general solvatochromic method, an advanced thermochromic shift method is used to estimate dipole moments.
