La B O (OH) was obtained by a high-pressure/high-temperature experiment at 6 GPa and 1673 K. The compound crystallizes in the space group P2 (no. 4) with the lattice parameters a=4.785(2), b=12.880(4), c=7.433(3) Å, and β=90.36(10)°, and is built up of corner- as well as edge-sharing BO tetrahedra. It represents the first acentric high-pressure borate containing these B O entities. The compound develops borate layers of "sechser"-rings with the La cations positioned between the layers. Single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, vibrational and MAS NMR spectroscopy, second-harmonic generation (SHG) and thermoanalytical measurements, as well as computational methods were used to affirm the proposed structure and the B O entities.

The inorganic pyrocarbonate salt Na[CO] crystallizes in the acentric, monoclinic space group 2 with = 2. It contains monovalent alkali metal cations together with isolated pyrocarbonate anions. The [CO]-groups consist of two planar [CO]-groups which are slightly tilted with respect to each other around the bridging oxygen atom.

Institut für Geowissenschaften, Universität Frankfurt, Altenhöferallee 1, 60438 Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

The high-pressure behavior of KIO(3) was studied up to 30 GPa using single crystal and powder x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, second harmonic generation (SHG) experiments and density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations. Triclinic KIO(3) shows two pressure-induced structural phase transitions at 7 GPa and at 14 GPa. Single crystal x-ray diffraction at 8.
