d-Glucose- and d-mannose- have been synthesized from sodium 2--d-gluconate (sodium d--hexulosonate). Reduction of the salt with lithium borohydride- produced the epimeric, 2-labeled aldonic acids in almost equal proportions. The acids, separated by carrier techniques, were lactonized, and the lactones were reduced with sodium amalgam to the corresponding sugars. The specificity of the labeling was established by converting each sugar into d--hexulose phenylosazone and determining that the osazone was substantially tritium-free.

A novel phosphate-solubilizing and zinc-solubilizing actinobacterium strain YIM S08009 was isolated from rhizosphere soil collected from Pinus yunnanensis in Wuliangshan National Nature Reserve, Pu'er City, Yunnan Province, southwest PR China. Cells of strain YIM S08009 were Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, irregular rods to cocci, and formed yellow and white colonies on nutrient agar. Growth was observed at 10-40 °C (optimum 25-35 °C), pH 6.

Sugars are ubiquitous in biology; they occur in all kingdoms of life. Despite their prevalence, they have often been somewhat neglected in studies of structure-dynamics-function relationships of macromolecules to which they are attached, with the exception of nucleic acids. Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health concern worldwide, contributing to high rates of injury-related death and disability. Severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI), although it accounts for only 10% of all TBI cases, results in a mortality rate of 30-40% and a significant burden of disability in those that survive.
