The increasingly widespread application of next-generation sequencing (NGS) in clinical diagnostics and epidemiological research has generated a demand for robust, fast, automated, and user-friendly bioinformatics workflows. To guide the choice of tools for the assembly of full-length viral genomes from NGS datasets, we assessed the performance and applicability of four open-source bioinformatics pipelines (shiver-for which we created a user-friendly Dockerized version, referred to as dshiver; SmaltAlign; viral-ngs; and V-pipe) using both simulated and real-world HIV-1 paired-end short-read datasets and default settings. All four pipelines produced consensus genome assemblies with high quality metrics (genome fraction recovery, mismatch and indel rates, variant calling F1 scores) when the reference sequence used for assembly had high similarity to the analyzed sample.

The development of effective and safe vaccines and their timely delivery to the public play a crucial role in preventing and managing infectious diseases. Many vaccines have been produced and distributed globally to prevent COVID-19 infection. However, establishing effective vaccine development platforms and evaluating their safety and immunogenicity remains critical to increasing health security, especially in developing countries.

Electroencephalography (EEG) has emerged as a pivotal tool in both research and clinical practice due to its non-invasive nature, cost-effectiveness, and ability to provide real-time monitoring of brain activity. Wearable EEG technology opens new avenues for consumer applications, such as mental health monitoring, neurofeedback training, and brain-computer interfaces. However, there is still much to verify and re-examine regarding the functionality of these devices and the quality of the signal they capture, particularly as the field evolves rapidly.

Sudden Fall Detection of Human Body Using Transformer Model.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Industrial Engineering, Chosun University, Gwangju 61452, Republic of Korea.

In human activity recognition, accurate and timely fall detection is essential in healthcare, particularly for monitoring the elderly, where quick responses can prevent severe consequences. This study presents a new fall detection model built on a transformer architecture, which focuses on the movement speeds of key body points tracked using the MediaPipe library. By continuously monitoring these key points in video data, the model calculates real-time speed changes that signal potential falls.
