Aim: To describe the experience of family caregivers of dependent elders during medical emergencies in rural settings in Thailand.

Methods: This was a descriptive qualitative research using in-depth interviews of 15 participants. Content analysis was applied to transcribed interviews, including data reduction as well as identification of key words, phrases, and themes.

Results: The findings described the experience of caregivers of dependent older persons who faced emergency illness. Most of the family caregivers described their roles in unusual situations as practising assessment first and doing something that may relieve the symptoms experienced by the older persons before initiating and calling for help from relatives, neighbors, and, finally, the emergency medical services. The caregivers four main barriers to them feeling competent: (1) lack of home monitoring devices, (2) inexperienced caregivers in assessing warning signs to report during emergency care, (3) lack of information and understanding of patient rights in emergency health services, and (4) delayed arrival of emergency medical services.

Conclusions: There are barriers to the development of competency in caregiving skills, especially in assessing and recognizing warning signs and initiating first aid accurately before the arrival of the emergency health care team.

Fermentation of American elderberry juice yields functional phytochemicals for spray dried protein-polyphenol ingredients.

Food Res Int

February 2025

Plants for Human Health Institute, Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences, North Carolina State University, 600 Laureate Way, Kannapolis, NC 28081, United States. Electronic address:

American elderberry juice (EBJ) and fermented elderberry juice (EBF) were spray dried using two different carriers: S. cerevisiae yeast (SC), used for juice fermentation and as encapsulating agent, and pea protein, to produce protein-polyphenol ingredients. The spray drying (SD) performance (solids recovery, SR; phenolic retention, PR) and quality attributes (physicochemical and functional properties, phytochemical content and bioaccessibility after in vitro digestion) of eight treatments of spray dried elderberry particles were determined.

Aggressive resection of non-contrast-enhanced tumor provides varying benefits to glioblastoma, IDH-wildtype patients based on different clinical characteristics.

Cancer Lett

January 2025

Department of Molecular Neuropathology, Beijing Neurosurgical Institute, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China; Department of Neurosurgery, Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Supramaximal resection in glioblastoma, concerning non-contrast-enhancing (nCE) tumors, exhibited additional survival benefits. However, whether all patients can benefit from supramaximal resection of nCE tumors and the optimal resection target remains unclear, especially for the glioblastoma, IDH-wildtype under the new WHO CNS tumor classification. Clinical and surgical characteristics were collected from 155 patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma, IDH-wildtype from the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas, and a prospective cohort of 128 patients was enrolled for external validation.

Prediction of oral diseases in care dependent older people.

BMC Oral Health

January 2025

Department of Odontology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Nørre Allé 20, Copenhagen, 2200, Denmark.

Background: A large number of older people depend on others for help with their daily personal care, including oral health care. Nursing home and elder-care staff often face challenges identifying older people, who are exposed to or at an increased risk of oral diseases. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify risk factors that non-dental care staff can use to identify older people at risk of oral diseases and poor oral hygiene.
