  • A gynandromorph is a rare individual exhibiting both male and female physical characteristics, particularly noted in wild-caught mosquitoes.
  • A gynandromorph mosquito was discovered in La Grajera wetland in La Rioja, Spain, in 2016.
  • The sex of its wings was analyzed using a linear discriminating analysis model, indicating that this specimen had an unusual male gynandromorph layout.

Article Abstract

A gynandromorph is an imago combining well-defined male and female structures, caused by different processes, and it is infrequent in wild-caught mosquitoes. A gynandromorph was caught in La Grajera wetland (La Rioja, Spain) in 2016. The phenotypic sex of wings was determined using linear discriminating analysis and the training error for the model on a previous database of sex-classified wing biometry data. It is suggested that the individual had an uncommon layout categorized as a top quarter male gynandromorph.

The microbiota, a component of the plant holobiont, plays an active role in the response to biotic and abiotic stresses. Nowadays, with recurrent drought and global warming, a growing challenge in viticulture is being addressed by different practices, including the use of adapted rootstocks. However, the relationships between these practices, abiotic stress and the composition and functions of the rhizosphere microbiota remain to be deciphered.

Background/objectives: Dysgeusia contributes to malnutrition and worsens the quality of life of patients with cancer. Despite the different strategies, there is no effective treatment for patients suffering from taste disorders provided by the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, we developed a novel strategy for reducing side effects in cancer patients by providing a novel food supplement with the taste-modifying glycoprotein miraculin, which is approved by the European Union, as an adjuvant to medical-nutritional therapy.

The Effectiveness of Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) Extraction Methods in Gram-Negative U.

Polymers (Basel)

January 2025

Área de Bioquímica y Biología Molecular, Departamento de Biología Molecular, Universidad de León, 24007 León, Spain.

Bioplastics are emerging as a promising solution to reduce pollution caused by petroleum-based plastics. Among them, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) stand out as viable biotechnological alternatives, though their commercialization is limited by expensive downstream processes. Traditional PHA extraction methods often involve toxic solvents and high energy consumption, underscoring the need for more sustainable approaches.

One of the significant challenges facing modern medicine is the rising rate of antibiotic resistance, which impacts public health, animal health, and environmental preservation. Evaluating antibiotic resistance in wildlife and their environments is crucial, as it offers essential insights into the dynamics of resistance patterns and promotes strategies for monitoring, prevention, and intervention. and genera isolates were recovered from fecal samples of wild animals and environmental samples using media without antibiotic supplementation.
