The utilization of manure resources is an important measure to promote the development of agricultural green low-carbon cycle and solve the challenges associated with the current large-scale development of the livestock and poultry breeding industry. Based on the survey data of pig farmers in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China, this paper constructs a theoretical analysis framework of pig breeding scale and technical cognition on the utilization behavior of livestock and poultry manure resources of pig farmers. The binary Logit model and the moderating effect model are used to deeply explore the scale effect of breeding scale on the utilization behavior of pig farmers' manure resources, and the moderating effect of technical cognition on the influence of breeding scale on the utilization behavior of manure resources.

Optimal Combination of Different Selection and Mating Strategies on Exploiting Genetic Diversity and Genetic Gain in Small Pig Conservation Populations.

J Anim Breed Genet

December 2024

Key Laboratory (Nanjing) for Evaluation and Utilization of Pigs Resources, College of Animal Science & Technology, Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing, People's Republic of China.

Both selection and mating systems are essential tools for breeders to conserve the genetic variance and improve the performance of livestock animals. How to effectively balance the genetic gain and inbreeding has always been an important issue in quantitative genetics research. In this study, a total of 11 selection methods, including random and truncation selection, six conventional selection methods, three different optimal contribution selection (OCS) methods and three mating strategies including random mating, minimum-coancestry mating based on pedigree (MCPed) and genomic information (MCmarker), were performed using stochastic simulations.

November 2024

Key Laboratory of Bio-Resource and Eco-Environment of Ministry of Education, College of Life Sciences, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan, China; Animal Disease Prevention and Food Safety Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province, China. Electronic address:

The livestock industry has long been a hotspot environment for antibiotic resistance genes, with smallholder farming still holding a significant position in pig farming. However, the microbial antibiotic resistance and pathogen risks in pigs under the smallholder farming model remain unclear. We systematically analyzed the antibiotic resistance and microbial composition of pig feces from smallholder and large-scale farming models in Sichuan.

Identifying freshness of various chilled pork cuts using rapid imaging analysis.

J Sci Food Agric

January 2025

China Light Industry Key Laboratory of Meat Microbial Control and Utilization, Hefei University of Technology, Hefei, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Determining the freshness of chilled pork is crucial for consumers, but traditional methods are often expensive and time-consuming, making them inaccessible for small traders.
  • This study utilized smartphone photography and image analysis to track color changes in pork stored at 4°C for 7 days, achieving high prediction accuracy for freshness indicators.
  • The researchers developed a non-destructive and user-friendly method using machine learning models, which outperformed traditional handheld colorimeters in both stability and accuracy.
